Well during conditioning we do a lot of endurance, which seems to help. We also focus on abs and arms. (Crunches, push ups.)

I think you should eat a lot of carbs so you have energy for a while, and try to conserve some energy while you're waiting, then before you go maybe do a few light sprint drills.

I was a gymnast before I started pole vaulting, and I think it helped me a lot. Expecially the un-even bars, because I kind of had an idea about what I was doing. Thanks for posting this.
