Chris in high school
Chris and I (his coach) learned a valuable lesson during his junior year in high school, you can over warm up and leave your best vaults in the warm up. We made a warm up rule his senior year, when coach said stop, we stopped. Generaly loosened up with some pop ups then checked for the step about 5x...

I have seen several pole breaks and heard several more. All injuries I have witnessed have been minor. All breaks I have seen have resulted in the vaulter landing on his back in the pit. IMO, the most dangerous place to be on a pole break is the official or the helpers, or anywhere around the pit......

Vaultn Chris
Chris was 5' 2" when he went 12' in 10th grade. I think he was 5'4" when he went 13' and not much more when he went 15' 7". He is 5' 6" now at 17' 1", am I right Chris? If you have never seen a "Not good at being tall" vaulter jump the heights Chris does, it is a real treat. Makes the jump look even...

Russell right there
OK...looks like the big 2 are the odds on favorites...so who is in the 3 slot? Being his former coach I got to go with Russell, but the top two need to be on to beat him. He tends to rise to the ocassion(pun intended) and has more confidence this year. The 18+ jump is ready. Go John!!!! Kira too!!! ...

Help for non-vaulter vault coach
I coach high school vault but was a dull and boring distance runner. I have had some success, but the one thing I can not tell my vaulters is how the vaults feels or what sensations to be looking for.....any pointers I could give my vaulters for the feel of the vault?

Chris is right RELAX, in addition....don't practice NOT planting, Jomrus and I did that for a week before his 1st state meet, he got really good at not jumping! Get out the slide box and get that run down. Take a deep breath and bring it and jump it. You may need to get away from the vault for awhil...
