ladyvolspvcoach, This assumes that you will hang on the pole by both arms. To get maximum leverage, all the weight should be on your top arm, and your bottom arm should be used for balance only. Therefore (assuming that you have the strength to do this), I think the width of the grip should be based...

Thus the age old line "RUN THROUGH THE TAKE-OFF NOT TO THE TAKE-OFF" Your last step must be active not passive. If you are still in contact with the ground you can create energy. Exactly! But at the risk of being repetitive, I'd like to stress this to any younger, less-experienced vaulters that sti...

1972 Munich Pole Vault Fiasco
I'm sorry to raise more questions than answers, and I apologize for any memory losses I might have had over the past 32 years. After I posted, I got to wondering why the heck there were only 2 US vaulters instead of 3, as I didn't remember any change in the number allowed from any one country. So if...

Confiscated Poles
If you need a first-hand account, I can give it to you, since I competed in the '72 Olympics. I wouldn't use the word "confiscated" as that implies that they took our poles away from us as if they were contraband or "illegal". Not so. They simply didn't allow us to use them. Seeing "Cata-Pole" on th...

Where Speed Counts
Several posters have mentioned that your speed "at takeoff" is important, not your 100m speed, or your speed down the runway. That's true, but I just want to give some hope to those that aren't blessed with blazing foot-speed. It's not the speed of your last step BEFORE the takeoff that's critical -...

I've never done this, but I've often thought about using a fibreglass pole as the high bar. The idea would be to use the flex of the pole just as a real high-bar bends - but maybe with some real kick! It should be high enough so that a foam pit (maybe high-jump size or a single pv slab) can be put u...

[quote="JMP8928... does anyone have any bright Ideas on how to get a couple of girls to first get over mentle issues about bending a pole ...?"[/quote] Bending the pole can be scary at first. Practice on a bungee on your goalposts, until you get the hang of sinking into the pole. (Pardon the pun.) I...

This might sound too obvious, but the only reason to tighten your grip on the pole (with either hand) is so that you don't drop it. You should experiment, and hold it as lightly as you can without dropping it (or losing control/balance of it). The looser the grip, the more relaxed (and faster) you'l...

Re: A Question
Vaultfan, you've done your homework. Good job! The tip of the pole should not be allowed to simply fall freely directly into the box where it will bounce (possibly back out of the box). In my experience, the pole has never bounced out of the box. This is probably becuz I aim for the back of the box ...

Don't assume that your dream 6-9 vaulter would have the same gymnastic skill as a 5-6 vaulter. There's a reason that top gymnasts are short, other than the fact that they'd scrape the floor doing giants. Two reasons: They have superior strength-to-weight ratios, and they have better leverage in mani...
