Re: Jan Wins Bronze in 1972 Olympics on Kirk's Catapole 550+
Mike....being the anal guy I am I will have to refer to some of the build sheets from way back when. I will have to go to storage to get them but I will try to find them. Going from memory I believe we made some 12' 100 lb test of various flexes. Heck..They looked like crossbars to me being a fat 17...

Re: Jan Wins Bronze in 1972 Olympics on Kirk's Catapole 550+
To clear up a few things...We did make some black poles using the 550 series fiber science. I believe they were screen printed like to older black poles unlike the sticker on the 550's This would of also included any prototypes. If you look inside the pole at the butt plug end you would of seen a &q...

Re: Jan Wins Bronze in 1972 Olympics on Kirk's Catapole 550+
Having made some of the poles that were used in the seventy two olympics I can tell you that some of the 550 series poles were indeed black. But I do not recall any that we put the 550 sticker onto. Going from memory is at best 90% good. The pole was same no matter what color they were during that r...

Re: History of the Pole Vault
After my last post I found this on the web................. "The Saxon educator Johann Guts Muths publishes Gymnastics for the Young. Three years later, he follows up with another book called Games. The idea of both books was that every minute of a schoolboy’s day should be filled with purposef...

Re: History of the Pole Vault
I read a book back in the 1970's about the history of the pole vault. The pole vault for height was credited with a guy by the name of Guts Muth in the 1700's. I remember his name cause my last name is DeMuth and who could forget a name like Guts? Anybody else ever seen this book?

You might be a Red Neck pole vaulter if you blame your last no height on your house arrest ankle bracelet.

Re: Who or What Motivated You to Start Vaulting?
Mike we have talked in the past. You actually inspired me to try vaulting again and I lost a bunch of weight and actually got a few 15 ft vaults at the age of 53. Then I tore my rectus femoris and now can barely walk a mile. Now at 55 I just watch my son and give him pointers. The fire that I had fo...

Who or What Motivated You to Start Vaulting?
My journey into the vaulting world was an "If You Build It They Will Come" type of thing. The first voice in my head came from Bob Richards in his Wheaties Commercial of the late 1950's. (Yes I'm Old) You saw him Vaulting and then telling you to eat Wheaties and you too can be a Champion. ...

Re: Who is the Best American Pole Vaulter in History
This is an easy question. Dutch Warmerdam hands down for the stiff pole era. Now it get tricky.....I would have to say that it is a 5 way tie in the composite era. The 5 are...Drum roll please......Bob Seagren, Serg Bubka, Jan Johnson, Mike Tully, and last but not least Dave Roberts. just my opinion...
