MERRIMACK - One of the four teens injured Monday afternoon in an accident on Interstate 93 has died.

Laura Wolf, 17, was pronounced dead at 4:45 p.m. on Tuesday, a spokesperson for Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon confirmed Wednesday afternoon.

One of Wolf’s Merrimack High School classmates remains in serious condition in a Boston hospital. Another is recovering at Dartmouth-Hitchcock, and the fourth was treated and released from a hospital following the crash in Sanbornton.

The accident occurred just north of Exit 22 when the driver apparently fell asleep at the wheel, state police said Wednesday. The teens, all high school seniors, were returning to Merrimack after a day spent snowboarding in the White Mountains.

The high school student body and community at large is reeling from news of the crash, which several people who knew the students described as a tragedy that befell a group of undeserving good kids, athletes and school leaders.

“It was a really, really tragic accident that happened to really, really good kids,â€Â

The reporter emailed me today with more information.

Ms. Gillespy,

The Wolf residence address isn't listed in the phone book, and I don't
have it. However, Laura's father, Dr. Ralph Wolf, has a medical practice
at 159 Kinsley St., Nashua, NH 03060.

Her mother's name is Barbara.

According to the death notice our paper ran today, the family is
requesting that memorial contributions be made to the Christian
Children's Fund, 2821 Emerywood Parkway, Richomd, VA 23286-4575.

Laura's track and field coach told me that the the pole vault community
is a tight-knit group. A number of people in this area have reached out
to the family, and I find it interesting and noteworthy that you feel
members of the pole vault community would do the same.

Remembering Laura

MERRIMACK - The death of Merrimack High School senior Laura Wolf has touched many people in the community. It also has had an impact on athletes across the globe.

Becca Gillespy is a pole vaulter at Lindenwood University near St. Louis. She runs a Web site called polevaultpower.com, concerning issues and people related to the sport.

Gillespy found The Telegraph’s story about Laura’s death in an AltaVista news search and noticed that she was one of the top high school pole vaulters in New Hampshire.

Because these athletes view fellow vaulters as members of a close fraternity, Gillespy posted the story and started a discussion board to share information and let people know how to send condolences to the Wolf family or to make contributions in Laura’s memory.

The message board at polevaultpower.com has about 1,100 members, mostly from the United States, but with other nations represented as well, including Canada, the United Kingdom, Australia and Brazil. As a stellar performer in an uncommon girls track and field event, Laura herself may even have visited the Web site, Gillespy said Friday in a telephone interview.

“I had never heard of Laura personally,â€Â

It is always sad to hear about another vaulter dying, especially in a car wreck. :(
