Rule changes

Just received this email and figured it was worth passing on.

Just returned from the USATF Annual Meeting and felt i should pass along two important NCAA rule changes for the event. The indoor season is starting and the NCAA rules books have just become available.
The first change is to delete Rule 6-6-2c, leaving the ground...... It is no longer a foul or miss if the vaulter leaves the ground in an attempt to vault, but does not clear the bar - the vaulter now has the same right as in USATF or IAAF to land on the runway or front of the pads and continue his effort subject to the remaining time for the attempt.

The second change, to Rule 6-6-5, allows an assigned official or the competitor to catch the pole, but NEVER TO PREVENT THE POLE FROM DISLODGING THE BAR.

Bob Podkaminer, NCAA and USATF Rules Editor suggested I pass the word along since many of you may work events before receiving the new NCAA books. Hope to see many of you in 2007.

Rule Change

I was not at the meeting. I am passing along an email I received from Stanley Underwood who did attend.

As was stated this is a change for NCAA rules. For this rule - NCAA, USATF, & IAAF are now the same.

And, of course, all other rules must be complied with - you still only get one minute.

Hope this is a help.

So this has been taken out of the NCAA rule book then.

This rule is not in the USATF book. Therefore, it was deleted out of the NCAA book if I am reading this correctly.

Therfore no you can't leave the ground and get reject and take another attempt.

Plus unless your straight pole jumping if the pole bends even if you get rejected once it breaks the vertical plane its a miss.

Yes you can get rejected and jump again provided you don't commit any other foul ie. time limit or land beyond the the back of the box. It is not a foul to break the vertical plane you just can't touch anything on the other side of the plane.

There is nothing in the NCAA book that says your pole can not break the back plane of the box. Here is what the NCAA declares as a "failed attempt" as of 2006

Failed Attempt
ARTICLE 2. A failed attempt shall be called when:
a. After the vault, the bar does not remain on the pegs because of the action
of the competitor while vaulting;
b. A competitor steadies the bar during an attempt;
c. A competitor leaves the ground in an attempt to vault and fails to clear
the crossbar; (This was removed for 2007)
d. Without clearing the bar, any part of the competitor’s body or the pole
touches the ground or the landing area beyond the vertical plane of the
inside edge of the top of the box;
e. During a vault, a competitor moves the upper hand higher on the pole
or raises the lower hand above the upper hand;
f. A competitor fails to initiate a trial as prescribed in Rule 6-1-3 or Rule
6-1-4;
g. A competitor violates the warm-up restrictions of Rule 6-1-12.
Note: It shall not be counted as a trial or failure if a competitor’s pole breaks during
an attempt to clear the bar.
