If you're a walk on, does that mean you have to get in the school by your grades and sat score? then you are allowed to be on the team

or is it that you got into the school because your vaulting.

i would hope that every student that is in college got there because of academics. after all, that is the point.
a walk on i believe is someone not on scholarship that enrolls in the school and decides to try out for the team. some schools may have limits for the number of walk ons but other schools may not.

so can you still get in a good school if you're really good at one sport, even if you dont have the good grades/sat scores?

If you are an invited walk on you can get in by the minimum standards. If you are a true walk on you gotta get into school on your own.

grades and test scores do influence getting into school. sometimes higher test scores can make up for lower grades or a high class rank can make up for lower test scores. it is also helpful if you plan to participate in activities or athletics at the school just the fact that you will be involved can be attractive to the school regardless of your actual ability. of course if you are good sometimes coaches have a little pull with admissions, but minimum requirements still need to be met. also, things like essays and recomendation letters or a good interview can make up for below average grades/scores

Some schools have "recruited" walk-ons, but you really are better off busting your butt in high school to get good grades.

well as long as you meet the NCAA minimums the school can let you in. Helps to have the HSR.
