Roy Announces New Addition to Coaching Staff

STORRS, Conn. (July 19, 2011) - University of Connecticut men's track and field head coach Greg Roy announced the hiring of UConn alum William B. Thomas to join the staff as an assistant coach for the upcoming 2011-12 season.

Thomas brings a vast amount of experience to the Husky program as both a recruiter and a coach.

"Will brings a variety of talents and experiences to our staff," stated Roy. "He will be responsible for most of the jumps and throws, and will be counted on to lead our efforts in employing current technology in both our coaching and recruiting efforts. The two things that I value most about Will are his fierce competitiveness and loyalty to his Alma Mater."

Thomas, a 2005 Husky graduate, most recently served as the assistant coach at the University of California at Berkeley for men's and women's track and field. At UC Berkeley, Thomas was responsible for recruiting and coaching pole vault, men's multi-events and recruiting and assisting with the throwing events.

During his year stint with the Golden Bears, Thomas coached two All-Americans, aided in meet management and created a Big Brother weekly academic program for freshman and at risk athletes.

Thomas also has experience as an assistant coach with Dartmouth College where he trained and developed the jumps and multi-event athletes, was the recruiting coordinator for the program and coached eight All-Ivy selections, two Heptathlon champions and one regional Qualifier in the long and triple jumps.

Prior to his year at Dartmouth, Thomas spent four years with Harvard University as the coaching assistant for men's and women's track and field. He was responsible for training and developing the vertical jump and multi-event athletes while also focusing on strength and conditioning. While assisting with the Crimson, Thomas coached 14 All-Ivy selections, eight Heptathlon champions, four All-Americans and one Olympic Trials finalist.


Thomas, a two-time team captain, was an outstanding athlete for the Huskies from 2001-2005 as he earned eight BIG EAST titles and was a three-time All-American. His accomplishments include four Outdoor Decathlon BIG EAST titles, two Indoor Pentathlon BIG EAST titles, an Indoor Heptathlon BIG EAST title and a High Jump BIG EAST title. Additionally, he was the 2003 BIG EAST Championship Outstanding Outdoor Field Performer and the 2004 BIG EAST Championship Outstanding Indoor Field Performer.
A 2005 graduate of UConn, Thomas earned his bachelor's degree in kinesiology.

DAYTON, Ohio – The University of Dayton has announced that Jason Francis has been hired as the head coach of women’s track and field.

“I’m grateful for the opportunity that the University of Dayton administration has given me,” Francis said. “I am really excited to get to work as head coach, and I am looking forward to continuing to build on the tradition at Dayton.”

Francis comes from the University of Wisconsin – Milwaukee, where he was the associate head track and field coach. During his seven-year tenure with the Panthers, he coached the men’s program to seven consecutive Horizon League Indoor and Outdoor Team Championships – 14 total. In the same time, the women’s program has produced eight championships. Francis helped establish a tradition of success with the men’s track and field program, which holds the third longest active conference winning streak in Division I with 16 straight Horizon League Men’s Conference titles.

With specializations in sprints, hurdles, jumps and combined events, Francis has mentored student-athletes to success at the national and regional levels. Over 150 of his student-athletes have claimed Individual or Relay Horizon League Championships, four of which were named the league’s Athlete of the Year. Francis has had 25 qualify for NCAA Preliminaries and coached Samia Taylor to the NCAA Division I Outdoor Track and Field Championships in the triple jump in 2011.

Under his tutelage Milwaukee’s Top 10 marks in men’s and women’s springs, hurdles, 800 meters jump and combined events have been completely rewritten. Francis’ student-athletes also excel in the classroom, a number of Panthers have been selected to the Horizon League’s Academic Honor Roll. Additionally, each of his programs held a team GPA of 3.00 or higher during 2010-11.

Prior to his time at Milwaukee, Francis served as a volunteer assistant pole vault coach at Division II Lewis University in Romeoville, Ill for one season. At Lewis, he mentored two national champions in the pole vault and coached six to Division II All-American selections.

Francis was also a volunteer assistant at his alma mater Indiana State University for two seasons. While at ISU, his vaulters broke the women’s indoor and outdoor pole vault records. Four of his student-athletes were named to the Missouri Valley All-Conference team and one was a regional qualfier for the NCAA Division I Track and Field Championships.

Francis' affiliation with Indiana State began as a student-athlete, as he competed in the pole vault and decathlon. Four times he was named to the all-conference team, including in 2001, when he won the outdoor conference championship in the decathlon. A Downers Grove, Ill., native, Francis began at DuPage Junior College after a standout prep career at Downers Grove North High School.

He earned is Master of Arts in Exercise Science from Indiana State in 2003, and completed his Bachelor of Science in Sports Studies from ISU in 2001.

Francis is USATF Level II certified in jumps, sprints, hurdles, combined events and throws.

Last season the Flyers earned their second consecutive Atlantic 10 Indoor Championship and placed second at the A-10 Outdoor Championships. Senior Mallory Barnes was an Indoor All-American with a sixth place finish at the NCAA Division I Indoor Championships. She was also part of a school record six student-athletes that qualified for the NCAA Division I Outdoor Track and Field East Preliminary.

Black Hills State University athletic director Jhett Albers announced the hiring of Seth
Mischke as the new head track and field coach on Thursday.
“Seth is a great fit for the Yellow Jacket track and field program,” Albers said. “He brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to the position. We are looking forward to the future of the program under his leadership.”
Mischke, a native of Worland Wyo., previously served as both the head track and field and head cross country coach for the past 12 seasons at St. Cloud State. Prior to becoming the head coach at St. Cloud State,
Mischke served as an assistant coach for two seasons.
“I am very excited to be a part of the Black Hills State Athletic Department as we move into a new Division and Conference,” Mischke said. “The tradition that Black Hills State has in track and cross country is impressive, and I feel very strongly about the possibilities here.”
During his tenure at St. Cloud State, the Husky programs produced 17 All-Americans (44 All-American awards), including one national champion, four runners-up and three third-place finishers. His programs combined to break 43 men’s and women’s indoor and outdoor school records at St. Cloud State.
Mischke sent 27 student-athletes to the national meet as qualifiers and coached 21 individual conference champions who competed in both the North Central Conference and the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference.
Mischke has twice been named the conference coach of the year. In 2005, he was named the NCC men’s indoor track and field coach of the year. During the 2011 season Mischke was named the NSIC men’s outdoor track and field coach of the year.
A graduate from the University of Minnesota in 1997, Mischke was a
consistent performer on the Golden Gophers squad. He was twice named a team captain.
His best finishes at the Big Ten Conference meet came in 1997. At the indoor meet he finished second in the pole vault, and at the outdoor meet he placed third in the decathlon. Mischke's personal bests during his collegiate career were clearing a height of 17 feet, 3 inches in the pole vault and scoring 7,026 points in the decathlon.
“I look forward to the process of helping the student/athletes achieve their academic and athletic goals while at Black Hills State,” Mischke said. “I can’t wait to get started.”

MOBILE, Ala. – University of South Alabama head track and field coach Paul Brueske recently announced the addition of two staff members to the Jaguar program.

Lyndell Farmer joins South Alabama from St. Paul’s Episcopal School, where he served as boys’ and girls’ assistant track coach since 2002. Farmer is a USA Track & Field (USTFA) Level I Certified Coach who was recently awarded with U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) certification.

Meghan Austin will serve as graduate assistant after obtaining a bachelor’s degree in education from Alabama, where she also garnered numerous awards while competing for the Crimson Tide track and field team.

“Coach Farmer has coached for a number of years locally and has produced numerous state and individual champions,” Brueske said. “We believe he will provide a great deal of stability to our program, and his influence should produce great support from the community which will be of great benefit to our current and prospective student-athletes.”

Farmer will once again have the opportunity to work alongside Brueske, as the two coached the St. Paul’s boys’ and girls’ teams to back-to-back state championships in 2006 and ‘07 during Brueske’s tenure with the Saints. After Brueske was hired by South Alabama, however, Farmer remained as the Saints’ girls’ team stretched their dominance through 2008, ’09 and ‘10 and the boys’ team also claimed state titles in 2008 and ‘10.

Prior to his tenure at St. Paul’s, Farmer served as boys’ and girls’ assistant track coach at Mobile Christian School, where he helped the Leopards’ men’s team to three straight state titles in 2000, ’01 and ’02.

While at Mobile Christian, Farmer coached eventual South Alabama decathlete Brandon Oliver, who was the 2004 Sun Belt Conference Indoor pole vault champion. Also, current Jag decathlete and pole vaulter Ashton Krause was a product of Farmer’s at St. Paul’s. Krause’s younger brother, Taylor, a recent South Alabama signee, also received numerous accolades under the coaching tenure of Farmer.

Farmer, who has maintained a top-10 ranking in the U.S. and world as a masters track athlete, first studied electrical engineering at College of the Ozarks from 1970-72. He then served as an Avionics Systems Specialist at the United States Air Force School of Applied Aerospace Science in 1973 and ‘74. Next, he studied biomedical engineering at Arkansas-Little Rock, and he is currently pursuing a master’s degree in exercise science at USA.

“I am very excited to have been given this opportunity,” Farmer said. “I believe in coach Brueske and the staff here, we are very serious about winning conference championships. I am close to many people in this community and am very excited to be in the position I am in now, because the University of South Alabama is growing very fast and the prospect for success in great.”

Farmer said that his coaching philosophy is based largely on his ability to still compete in the events he coaches.

“If I have an idea for an adjustment of a student-athlete’s technique, it helps immeasurably that I can show it to them by actually performing it,” he said.

New gig for Doug Fraley

Yet another challenge for Doug Fraley, but surely this will be the most natural of all.

A 46-year-old man whose lifetime highs and lows range from winning the NCAA pole vault title three times at Fresno State to surviving Hurricane Katrina with his family six years ago, he has been named vault coach at Tulane University in New Orleans.

He's had no shortage of full-time coaching opportunities while managing two spinal-care clinics in the New Orleans area for 15 years before retiring from that early last year.

"It's something that I resisted for a long time," he said of full-time coaching. "Then I decided three months ago I'd try to get into the college ranks and, funny deal, the Tulane job happened to open up."

Fraley led Team New Orleans, which placed third.

Matt Chisam Joins Cal Staff as Assistant Coach
Former Decathlete to Mentor Bears in Pole Vault, Jumps

BERKELEY - Matt Chisam, an All-American decathlete as a collegian who spent the past five years at Harvard, has joined the California track & field staff as an assistant coach where he will primarily work with the Golden Bears in the pole vault and jumps.

While with the Crimson from 2006-11, Chisam helped develop and implement training programs for the hurdles, pole vault, high jump and multi-events. He directly coached four conference champions, as well as 18 ECAC or IC4A qualifiers. In addition, Chisam handled a number of administrative responsibilities, including coordination of timing systems for home meets, managing Harvard's multi-event competitions and playing an active role in hosting the 2009 Indoor Heptagonal Championships.

While at the Massachusetts school, Chisam also served as a volunteer coach with the Cambridge Jets, overseeing sprints and jumps training for a local youth team. He began his coaching career as an assistant coach at Alhambra High School in Martinez, Calif., working with student-athletes in the shot put and discus.

Chisam starred at the college level at nearby UC Davis, finishing as the NCAA Division II runner-up in the decathlon in 2003 and serving as team captain in 2005. He also won conference titles in the decathlon and 110-meter hurdles and received a school-wide Outstanding Senior Award from the university.

Chisam continued to compete in the decathlon through 2009. Most recently, he took ninth at the 2009 USA championships in the decathlon, was fourth in the indoor combined event championships in the heptathlon in '09 and placed 15th in the decathlon at the 2008 Olympic Trials.

Chisam has been the USATF Athlete Advisory Committee representative for the decathlon since 2010, and he served as an assistant coach for the USATF decathlon team for the 2011 Thorpe Cup, a competition between athletes from the United States and Germany.

Among the athletes he has mentored are Nathalie Grant, who holds the Jamaican record in the hammer (216-10), and Beck Christensen, who has cleared 6-3.25 in the high jump.




Chisam received his bachelor's degree in optical science and engineering from UC Davis in 2005. He is also a certified athletic trainer.
Chisam is the son of Scott and Roberta Chisam, both longtime track & field coaches who remain active with the sport. Scott Chisam guided the UCLA women's team to NCAA title in 1982 and '83 and later was an assistant at Stanford, while Roberta Chisam is currently the girls' cross country coach at St. Francis High School in Mountain View. Both have also served on several Olympic and international team staffs.

Emory Track and Field Names Mark Johnson Assistant Coach
Emory University head track and field coach John Curtin has announced the appointment of Mark Johnson as assistant coach. His duties will primarily consist of coaching the Eagles' multi-event athletes, throwers and jumpers.

Johnson’s most recent coaching stint was at Sandia Preparatory School in Albuquerque, New Mexcio, where he was responsible for the boys and girls throws and horizontal jumps. He had nine state qualifiers representing every event and coached one state champion.

Johnson served as an assistant track and field coach for the men’s and women’s programs at Williams College in 2007-08, working with the multi-events, pole vault and high jump performers. He helped coach both teams to New England and NESCAC championships and had a pair of his athletes garner All-New England and All-NESCAC acclaim.

Prior to his stint at Williams, Johnson was an assistant coach at the University of New Mexico for two seasons (2005-06 and 2006-07) where he designed and implemented workouts for multi-events and all jumps. He coached a total of 10 NCAA Championships qualifiers and mentored one All-American.

“Mark will be a good fit for our staff,” Curtin said. “We were looking for someone with a strong multi-event background who could understand both Emory and Division III and Mark fit the bill.
In addition to being an outstanding decathlete and strong in the vertical jumps and throws, Mark was an NCAA Post Graduate Scholar and has earned an MBA. He is a really bright guy with a lot of different interests. We think we have found a great coach and person for our kids to work with.”

As an athlete, Johnson enjoyed a stellar career at the University of New Mexico. He won the Mountain West Conference titles in both the decathlon (2002) and heptathlon (2004) and finished 15th in the decathlon at the 2004 NCAA Championships with a career-best score of 7,277 points. A five-time all-MWC honoree, Johnson also qualified for the 2004 NCAA Midwest Regional Championships in the pole vault, finishing ninth with a career-best vault of 16-05.25.

He was a two-year letterwinner at goalkeeper for the UNM men's soccer team, appearing in six games from 2000-01. He and skier Stian Erikson were the first two athletes in UNM history to appear at the NCAA Championships in two different sports. The two were teammates on the 2001 men's soccer team which advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament.

Johnson was the Lobos' was an Academic All-American, earning first-team honors in 2004. The Fontana, Wisconsin, native graduated from UNM in December of 2002 with a degree in Spanish and earned his MBA in May of 2004. Johnson was an Academic All-American posting a 3.85 undergraduate GPA and was a 4.0 graduate student. He was a recipient of a 2004 NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship.

UND rounds out track staff with hiring of Silvers

GRAND FORKS, N.D. - University of North Dakota Head Track and Field Coach Kevin Galbraith announced today the hiring of Joe Silvers as an assistant coach. Silvers will coach the multi and jumping events.

Silvers comes to UND after spending the past two seasons as an assistant coach at Idaho State, where he worked primarily with ISU's multi-event student-athletes. One of those student-athletes, Justin Critser, qualified for the 2010 USA Junior Outdoor Track and Field Championship.

Before beginning his coaching career in 2009, Silvers was a pole vaulter and decathlete at Idaho State from 2004-09.

"Having someone who can coordinate the multi-events, pole vaults and jumps is important for our program," said Galbraith. "Joe has experience in all of those areas, which helps us greatly. He also did it in the Big Sky Conference, so he's going to know what our student-athletes need to do in order to be successful when we're competing at that level a year from now."
A two-time letterwinner at ISU, Silvers was a member of the Bengals' Big Sky Conference championship team in 2006 and was the 2009 Idaho Cup pole vault champion.

Silvers graduated from ISU in 2009 with a bachelor's degree in sports management and a minor in coaching. He received his master's degree in athletic administration from ISU in 2010 and is considering pursuing a degree in sport psychology.

Silvers received his USA Track & Field (USATF) Level 1 coaching certificate in 2010.

The addition of Silvers completes UND's track and field coaching staff. Galbraith announced the hiring of assistant coach (throwers) Peter Miller in September.

Wilson Joins Track and Field Coaching Staff

MOUNT PLEASANT - Bobby Wilson will be joining the Central Michigan track and field program for the 2011-2012 indoor and outdoor seasons as an assistant coach.

Wilson, who most recently served one season as the head coach for both cross country and track and field programs at State University of New York at Oswego, will be replacing Glenn Smith, who recently accepted a position with the Canadian National Team.

Wilson will fill the role of coaching jumpers, pole-vaulters and multi-events, such as the men’s decathlon and women’s heptathlon.

“We are excited to be able to add a coach the caliber of Bobby Wilson to our staff,” said CMU director of track and field/cross country Willie Randolph. “He has a proven track record of success and will help us continue to build and develop our program at CMU.”

During his stint as head coach at Oswego State, his teams set nine new program records, including six during the men’s indoor and outdoor seasons and two for the women’s teams.

Prior to his time at Oswego State, Wilson served as the assistant coach for Bucknell University’s cross country and track and field programs for three seasons, specializing in training jumpers, pole-vaulters and multi-event athletes.

He worked directly with four All-East athletes during those three seasons and coached Patriot League champions in each of the events he coached. Wilson coached Amy Mantush, who set a school and league record in the high jump.

Among his accomplishments with the Bison are 2009-2010 Patriot League titles for all of the women’s teams (cross country, indoor, and outdoor) and the men’s track and field teams, as well as league titles for the women’s indoor and outdoor teams in 2008 and 2009, respectively.

Wilson has also coached at the College of William & Mary (2005-2007), the State University of New York at Oneonta (2002-2003), and his alma mater Virginia Commonwealth University (2000-2002).

At William & Mary, Wilson coached five school records, a national qualifier in the women’s heptathlon in 2007, two ECAC champions in the heptathlon and All-East performances in the pole vault and high jump.

As an athlete at VCU, Wilson was the 1998 Colonial Athletic Association champion in the pole vault, and he was the school-record holder until 2010. He graduated in 2002 with a bachelor’s degree in travel and tourism with a minor in information systems. He is currently working toward a sports management master’s from VCU.

Two School Record Holders Added to Track & Field Staff

PHILADELPHIA - School record holders Tuan Wreh, C'02, and Samantha Crook, were both added to the University of Pennsylvania track and field staff on Wednesday. Wreh holds two school records, while Crook stands as the only female athlete in program history to pass four meters in the pole vault.

"We are very fortunate to have two former Quakers, who both love this University and the Penn track and field programs, come back to coach at their alma mater," said interim men's track and field head coach Robin Martin, who was instrumental in adding the two former Penn standouts to the staff.

"Tuan and Sam have been highly successful outside of their track careers," Martin added. "So its a testament to both programs when two school record holders return to give back to the University when they undoubtedly have so many other opportunites out there. We are truly lucky to have such a dedicated and talented staff."

Crook, the indoor and outdoor school record holder in the pole vault, has served as a volunteer assistant coach at Penn since 2005. She will work primarily with the men's and women's pole vaulters and will also assist with the sprinters and jumpers. Wreh will work with the men's jumpers, while also assisting with the sprinters.

Crook initially set the school record in the outdoor pole vault as a freshman in 2002 and has held the program's indoor and outdoor top marks since 2003. A four-time letterwinner, Crook won the ECAC outdoor title in 2005 and reached the 2005 Outdoor NCAA Championships where she surpassed the four-meter mark. In addition, she finished in the top two at the Heptagonal Championships five times.
