Scott Stills of UNC who coached his athlete to 17 feet last year and a ACC conference championship was fired early this year. Anyone know why

Val Osapenko of UVA was also fired. He too coached a 17 ft soph last year and was runner up in the ACC.

Anyone know what the deal is

I can't comment on the situation with the UNC coach, but I do know some details of the UVA situation. The head coach of Uva wanted to hire a full time jumps coach (both vertical and horizontal jumps), as he no longer wanted a seperate vault coach. The head coach offered Coach Osipenko the opportunity to remain the pole vault coach, but only under the condition that he was a volunteer coach. Coach Osipenko turned down the offer, most likely because he owns his own club in Richmond, and would rather coach there, than to volunteer at Uva...however, that's just speculation on my part. In addition, his daughter, who has the school record, graduated last spring, and his son, as far as I know, no longer attends Uva. You can PM me if you have any specific question, I might be able to answer.

Eric

P.s. I've been told that the new jumps coach at Uva is the former assistant coach for loyola college. I forget the name.

Actually I think she graduated a year before this past spring. She's a member of the board but I don't remember her username off the top of my head.

My fault, she may have graduated earlier than I thought. I never knew her, but I did personally know Coach Osipenko and his son Val. Coach Osipenko coached for a brief time at my high school, as I was entering, and Val, his son, is the school record holder.

i am friends with big val and little val. little val last i talked to him was still at uva, but due to struggling with a knee injury he suffered as a freshman, has all but retired from vaulting. i haven't gotten the chance to talk to him sincei found out about all this. I heard it from david sullivan, one of their vaulters. he said the new uva vault coach is pretty bad, hasn't had a vaulter in like 6 years. so hes pretty frustrated.

i used to jump with coach stills when i was in h.s. he coached at my rival hs but we would all get together and jump in the summers. this is why i ask if anyone knows more details as i have ties to both of them.

I have heard the same...best guy over 16 feet and one girl who has jumped 10'9, in his coaching career. My girlfriend is a first-year at Uva and is a vaulter there, thus all of the details. Also heard, he said that "gymnastics and pole vaulting are not related." hmmmmmm.....

oh yeah, you don't have to run to pole vault...I mean its not like its necessary or anything :dazed: ...although, I've seen some guys who have been slow runners and for some strange, odd, purely coincidental reason, they had a hard time getting off the ground....maybe they were just holding too high. ;) yes...I'm sure it was that. lol

Hey be nice... we don't know the context of that quote, and this isn't really the place to be bashing people.
