Pole Vault:

Oregon may historically be known for their distance running, but super sophomore Tommy Skipper is changing that perspective. As a true freshman last season, Skipper placed second indoors to Washington’s Brad Walker and then won the outdoor meet with a clearance of 18-08.25. It’s only a matter of time before Skipper will clear 19-feet. An overall excellent athlete as well, Skipper scored 7,589 points in the decathlon last season during the PAC 10 Championships. Akron’s John Russell has jumped well in the past while placing third during the indoor meet last season. However, while opening at 5 meters, Russell did not clear his opening height during the outdoor meet, so he should be hungry to avenge that performance. Yoo Kim of UCLA stepped up at the right time during the outdoor meet last season, clearing 18-04.50 to place second behind Skipper. Now a senior, Kim has the experience to become a champion and will battle Skipper plenty of times this year as both are in the same conference. More athletes to look out for include Paul Gensic of Air Force, Robbie Pratt and Trent Powell of BYU, Brad Smith of Georgia, Ray Scotten of Nebraska, Kevin Opalka of Arizona and Texas Tech’s Jared Thornhill, Sage Thames and Bobby Most.

Pole Vault:

Chelsea Johnson of UCLA is the defending outdoor champion, collegiate record holder and will be the favorite for the indoor title. Johnson was upset last year in Arkansas to Fanni Juhasz of Georgia and will look for her first indoor title. More bright stars that will shine on the scene will include Kate Soma of Washington, Jenny Green and Christi Lehman of Nebraska, Jackie Nguyen of UCLA, Breanna Eveland of Kansas State, Connie Jerz of Arizona, Jackie Rodgers of Kent State and former champion Lacy Janson of Florida State. Amy Linnen could be a name to keep a close eye on as the former Arizona star is now enrolled at Kansas. Linnen holds a personal best of 14-10.25. There will be some surprises in this event with the improvements made over the years as some of the top high school seniors should make an impact this season as college freshman.
