That's the second or third time I have seen him clear 580 and brush it on the on the way down because he has his standards all the way back.

I think Tommy has the most raw potential of all the upcoming vaulters. He has the least refined technique(which I look at as a good thing- ie still lots of room to improve) but still jumps very high. Once he polishes everything up hes gunna jump real big

I can't tell for sure...but in the video over 19' it doesn't look like Tommy's standards are all the way back....still 5 centimeters or so and he would have made that.

Instead of moving your standards, jump with better technique instead.

Oh I agree, I'm not saying he should have moved them, just that he might have made the bar if he did. But, it is true that keeping them back will pay off for his technique in the long run.

Yeah, i never move my standards, They dont adjust to your vault, you adjust to clear the bar

I jumped with Tommy twice indoors, and his standards were never back at 80. He always had them at 60 or closer. I'm not saying he does that all the time, thats just what I've seen. Plus he landed on the front buns next to the box, not once, but twice in Boston, scared the hell out of us. He has the classic "bar went up, I must go up poles" syndrome.

i think many of us have the syndrome too. I have it sometimes, only when I'm blowin through a pole at a good height, then i move up -- which seems logical.

Yeah, but if your doing it when your your blowing through poles than its not the sydrome, its just smart vaulting.

I saw Tommy jump in Seattle. He was going through a lot of poles at that time.

Given a whole outdoor season ahead of him, I'm guessing that he'll know those poles a whole lot better as the season progresses, and those depth choices will get to be less of an issue.

I have no doubt that he'll get 19'. It'll be interesting to see how far beyond that he can get this season.
