Summer Training

Unread postby uconnvaulta » Wed May 25, 2005 11:44 am

The summer is now upon us and the season for me anyways since it is just really getting started, it is actually ending for me cus i have redshirted this whole year. But after regionals and NCAAs what is every doing, what does everyone tend to do for the summer. im still training, jumping around once a week after work even if its a short approach on a small stick. and running and lifting, what do other peeps normally do, you guys take a break for a little bit or what. All i know is that i cant wait till next year, cus redshirting a whole year is so freakin aggrivating. Im comin for you guys on the east coast too :D

You might look for your local AAU or USATF club and help out!! It's a great way to make a contribution and stay on a pole for the summer!!~

You guys should make a road trip out to Western WA and jump in some of the meets there!

There is a meet in BC in mid-June, there are beach vaults July 4th and another one the following Saturday in western WA. We have all-comers meets every Wednesday near Seattle and every Monday in Bellingham (near Canada).

I'm sorry this may be off topic, but i was curious about what redshirting is. I thought i new the term but recently i've heard another definition for it, i thought that it only applied to you if you were injured...

There are a couple different reasons for redshirting...First injury, if you get injured you are allowed to redshirt (depending on meets competed in, yada yada NCAA rules). Also, if you or your coach decide, you can redshirt to get stronger, work on technical stuff, whatever you may feel necessary, and lasly, olympic redshirts (this is kinda diff) but you are allowed a year of not competing NCAA to train for the olympic trials and so on.
Champions aren't made in gyms. Champions are made from something they have deep inside them-a desire, a dream, a vision. They have to have last-minute stamina, they have to be a little faster, they have to have the skill and the will. But the will must be stronger than the skill. - Muhammad Ali

Talent in cheaper than table salt. What separates the talented individual from the successful one is a lot of hard work.

So then here's my next question, is it a bad thing to redshirt then?

No, absolutely not. When you redshirt, you are taking a season to train and/or recover from an injury without using up any NCAA eligibility.
Since you only get 4 indoor and 4 outdoor seasons from the NCAA for 5 total years, you have that extra redshirt year to spare to use whenever you need to.

I used my redshirt year (the ENTIRE year) to recover from dual stress fractures in my lowest vertebrae. No NCAA eligibility lost, so I have two more years left.

redshirting is real good for you if you love the event and want to put the work into it, if you dont like what you are doing and want to get out of school in4 years then your screwed, but redshirting is a great idea for training and just working on things you dont normally get to during a competition year because you are worrying about points or whatever it might be.
i redshirted this whole year and it has helped so much i cant wait to get back and put some big heights on the board.
