Hartwig gears up for Trials with Prefontaine Classic win

At 36 years old, who said Jeff Hartwig is over the hill?
He’s still flying over the bar.
The Jonesboro resident notched his first victory of the year in the United States last weekend, winning the prestigious Prefontaine Classic in Eugene, Ore., by clearing 19-01/4.
Hartwig, who set the event record in the event by clearing 19-9 in 1999, topped some of the nation’s best, including Toby Stevenson. Stevenson boasts the best mark in the world this year at 19-81/2, but placed fourth in the Prefontaine.
Four vaulters jumped 191/4 but Hartwig did so with the fewest misses to win the meet. He cleared the bar on his first attempts at 18-1/4, 18-41/2 , 18-81/4 and the winning mark to gain momentum heading into next month’s U.S. Olympic Team Trials.
