Fredonia grad to attempt top pole vault of season

Jen Stuczynski
12/6/2006 - OBSERVER Staff Report

Jennifer Stuczynski will attempt the best indoor pole vault of the season today at the Voller Athletic Center arena at Roberts Wesleyan College outside Rochester. Although a college press release said Stuczynski would be trying for a world record, the 2000 Fredonia High School graduate said Tuesday that she's only attempting to beat the season's best U.S. mark.

"It's pretty much a promotional thing for Roberts," Stuczynski said. "I'm just going to go in there for a short run and try to promote track and get some people from the community in."

Stuczynski made waves in the track and field world two years ago when she won the USATF US Indoor National Championship after taking up pole vaulting just 10 months earlier. She went on her first European tour over the summer and earned two win in six meets. Since then, Stuczynski has been keeping with her offseason regimen consisting of weight training and light vault work.

"It's just a time to recover and rejuvenate yourself," she said.

Free pictures of Stuczynski will be available to the first 100 people at the event, which is also free of charge. She'll sign autographs afterward.

Jennifer Stuczynski looks to be in early season form last night off of a modified training pole run. Stuczynski cleared 14'6". Coach Suhr commented, "We jumped in this meet for promotion of Roberts Wesleyan Track and Field. We are at a point in our training where we are still working on short run distances and making technical corrections. However, this was a very good jump considering her short run PR was 14'1". This tells us that we have made really good adjustments in the up-top phase of our vault. Our training is right on schedule for where we want it to be right now." Stuczynski was the well accepted highlight of the pole vault event posting about 500 spectators from the college, community, and local high schools.
