The first day of the Pan American Junior Championships concluded Friday in Sao Paulo, Brazil, with Team USA claiming seven individual champions and sweeping the top two places in three separate events.

Scott Roth (Granite Bay, Calif.) and Jordan Scott (Watkinsville, Ga.) finished first and second, respectively, in the men's pole vault. Roth cleared 5.30m/17-4.50 while Scott cleared 5.10m/168.75.

Earns first international gold medal at Pan Am Games

Scott Roth can add another gold medal to his already extensive collection, thanks to his performance at the Pan American Junior Champion-ships in Brazil.

The Granite Bay product placed first in the pole vault with a mark of 17 feet, 4½ inches, besting teammate Jordan Scott for the gold.

While Roth has accumulated his share of hardware over the years, this particular gold medal has a little extra luster - it was his first in an international competition.

Roth said the first-place finish was even sweeter because of his narrow miss at the 2005 World Youth Championships in Morocco, where he finished second.


The competition itself was a bit anti-climactic, however, as Roth and Scott were the only vaulters to clear the opening height of 16-8 ¾.

"The competition didn't have a whole lot of adrenaline," Roth said. "As soon as we cleared the first bar we knew we'd get first and second, so neither of us really jumped all that high."

Scott did not clear another bar after the opening height, while Roth cleared two more to claim the gold medal. He showed no ill effects from the back injury that hampered him during the NCAA Outdoor Championships in early June, where he placed eighth as a freshman for the University of Washington.
