http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ir6tbAKK ... rofilepageHow is he not consistently on top of the US Mens field? This jump was 4 months ago and he is putting at least a foot and a half over 18 feet. I know its not "Petrov" but its one heck of a jump!

EDIT: Yeh, nice jump!
On this one ...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W07KIsMD7ok&NR=1 ... he just barely squeeked over 5.50 ... hitting the bungee on the way down.
But here he is clearing 5.80 cleanly! Nice!

Jacob normally is in the top of the mens list. Last year he had a rough year due to a pinched nerve in his back that led to all sorts of problems. and still jumped 5.60. The year before he made the finals at the olympic trials, and jumped 5.80. The year before that he made the world team. Hes been around a good bit.

I've always liked Pauli. He's not perfect Petrov, but in my opinion, he's one of the better elite technicians, right now. I've always wondered too, why he wasn't one of the more recognized vaulters in the US, but brian's explanation would make sense. He was definitely entered in A LOT of meets, last season, but he wasn't very consistent. I'd understand if his back was giving him problems, and every time he pushed it, it affected his performance. I hope he has a speedy recovery and puts up some impressive numbers this year. -6P

I know he has been around a while, and yes he has been near the top. But 4 months ago was June (when people are jumping big in meets), and I think that kind of jump would go 5.90. When did he get hurt?

ive seen video of him nearly making 6.0m in practice with a bar from like 2 years ago. last year he hurt his back early in the fall. so it was a rough year for him.
hes a beast. he will put up some more numbers for sure!

I think he's been struggling with nagging injuries for a few years. He's definitely a guy with the potential to jump really high.

"He's definitely a guy with the potential to jump really high." First needs to ensure a free take off ---- but he will certainly not jump really high until he improves the third phase considerably. IMHO

altius id like to hear more the specifics of his 3rd phase faults. Its really interesting to me because he does so much right obviously.
heres a clip from later in that summer (still on the mend of some injuries) of him jumping 5.50 in practice huge. 14' step, 5.05ish grip. really good chest drive at take off. long left leg swing. but the right leg looks like it tucks on its own, and comes way back. would you mind elaborating on your analysis. if not publically drop me a pm. always like to learn more

I am going to guess this is what Altius is talking about. The massive tuck. Pauli does not appear to me to be tucking his legs like most tuck and shooters though, but once he passes through the chord of the pole he just seems to fold in half at the abs, wait a second, then explode off the top.
But if you look at that picture and did not know that was a successful jump, it does not look like someone could get out of that position, it just looks jumbled and cramped. If he were doing that exact same thing on a high bar, then when he went to swing over the bar he would have to swing under it to hit that position. But the start of his jump looks like one of the best in the world, with his step being on, and a really big trail leg and chest drive!
