It was her highest jump ever, and now pole vault champion Jenn Suhr can add world record holder to her list of accomplishments. YNN's Mark Goshgarian spoke with the Olympic gold medalist, and her parents, about a career that's reached new heights.
FREDONIA, N.Y. — It was a jump that landed Olympic Gold Medalist Jenn Suhr in the record books.
"Anytime you can break a record and set a personal best no matter what level you're at, is exciting," said Jenn Suhr, Pole Vault Record Holder, USA Track and Field Indoor National Championships.
Suhr cleared 16 feet, five-and-a-half inches, and set a women's indoor pole vault record at the USA Indoor Nationals in Albuquerque, New Mexico over the weekend.
"And to do it at the National Championships and then to come out with the world record, that was really the goal going in there," said Suhr.
Suhr picked up her sixth straight national title, and seventh overall.
"It never gets old. I was relieved, I was happy, it was more of a finally type of moment, it was okay, good, now really, the work can begin," said Suhr.
Suhr's parents, Mark and Sue Stuczynski of Fredonia, admit they were nervous as they watched the event online.
"We're just proud of her, when I saw her clear it, I knew she had it in her, we knew she was capable, she's worked hard, she's been hitting those heights in practice a lot," said Mark Stuczynski.
"When she finally cleared it, it was just relief that she had done it, and really really proud and amazed that she did it on her first attempt," said Sue Stuczynski.
While Suhr says she's extremely grateful for her parents support over the years, she enjoys coming home to Fredonia to get away from the sport and spend time with a family that keeps her grounded.
"It's all about the dogs, the animals, the nieces, my brother, my sister, you know so its very family oriented," said Suhr.
"Up" next, Suhr will begin training for the outdoor season.
