Qualifying Standards and Procedure
----------------------------------
Men's US Olympic Trials "A" Qualifier 5.70m 18'08.25"
Men's US Olympic Trials "B" Qualifier 5.50m 18'00.50"
Women's US Olympic Trials "A" Qualifier 4.47m 14'08.00"
Women's US Olympic Trials "B" Qualifier 4.27m 14'00.00"
Field Size : 24 Entrants
"A" - athletes who attain the "A" standard will automatically be
included in the event.
"B" - athletes who attain the "B" standard will be included in the
event only if additional competitors are needed to fill the stated
field size (i.e., not enough athletes have attained the "A" standard).
ÂÂ
- subject to the Qualifying Guidelines, entry process, and
declaration process. If the "B" standard is used, only the
number of athletes needed to fill the stated field size will
be included in the event. These athletes must declare, and
they will be invited for inclusion only after the close of
declarations.
Field sizes are the approximate number of desired participants in
each event (not the minimum).
Relevent Qualifying Guidelines
All qualifying performances for running events must be made on a
standard outdoor track or during the 2004 indoor season on an indoor
track in the same event
Qualifying marks must be made and verifiable in one of the following:
- USATF- or IAAF-sanctioned events,
- collegiate meets where events prescribe to or exceed USATF
competition rules
- high school meets, except duals and triangulars.
All qualifying performances are subject to verification.
All qualifying marks must be attained between January 1, 2003 and
July 1, 2004.
Special Qualifying Regulations
Automatic Qualification [USATF Rules 10.3(b)i and 10.3(b)ii]
A Track & Field athlete is eligible for automatic qualification into
the Olympic Trials in the same event if that athlete has:
- Earned an individual medal in an Olympic Games or in an IAAF
World Indoor or Outdoor Championships during the year 2004, or
during the four previous calendar years (2000, 2001, 2002, 2003)
- Won an individual 2003 USA Outdoor Track & Field Championship event
----------------
The Olympic Team
----------------
Men's Olympic "A" Qualifier 5.65m 18'06.50"
Men's Olympic "B" Qualifier 5.55m 18'02.50"
Women's Olympic "A" Qualifier 4.40m 14'05.25"
Women's Olympic "B" Qualifier 4.25m 13'11.25"
The U.S. Olympic Track & Field Team will be selected as follows:
An athlete's rank order of finish in a designated event at the
Olympic Trials and the number of athletes who have achieved the Olympic
"A" qualification standard will be used to select the U.S. Olympic
Track & Field Team.
The following criteria will be used to nominate athletes to the 2004 U.S. Olympic Team:
- Order of Finish: All athletes competing in an Olympic Trials
event will be assigned a rank based upon the order of finish
for that event. An athlete must finish each event in which
she/he is entered (declared) in order to be assigned a rank.
Rank order of finish for an individual event will be established
as follows:
- Field Events
1 Athletes participating in the final round of competition will
be assigned a rank based upon their place-finish in the finals
2 Athletes finishing the qualifying round of competition will be
assigned a rank based upon the athlete's best mark. An athlete's
ranking will be based upon the highest round completed by an
athlete. Ties in the pole vault will be broken by a jump-off,
to the extent that it is necessary to nominate a team member in
that particular event.
- Olympic "A" Standard: The number of athletes who have achieved
the Olympic "A" standard in a designated event will determine
the number of athletes who will be nominated (up to 4) to the
U.S. Olympic Team for that event.
For all track & field events:
1 No later than July 18, 2004, USATF will nominate to the USOC
the names of four athletes in each individual event. These
athletes are then considered to be candidates for the Olympic
Team. Only these athletes may subsequently be entered to
compete and thereby become official Olympic Team members,
based upon the qualifying standard met by these individual
athletes.
2 These four candidates are selected by virtue of their place of
finish at the Olympic Trials and qualifying standards that they
have achieved after January 1, 2003.
3 If there are four or more athletes who have achieved the "A"
standard in an event, then the top four "A" qualifiers will
be nominated as candidates in rank order of finish from the
Olympic Trials.
4 If there are fewer than four athletes who have achieved the "A"
standard, then all those who have achieved the "A" standard
will be nominated as candidates. To fill out the list of four
candidates, the highest-placing finishers who have achieved the
"B" standard will be nominated in order of finish at the Olympic
Trials. If there are not enough "B" standard athletes to fill
the list of four Candidates, then the highest-placing finishers
at the Olympic Trials who are without a standard will be added
to the list of four candidates in order of finish at the Olympic
Trials.
5 All athletes who are listed as Olympic Team Candidates on July
18, 2004 will have until August 9, 2004 to achieve an Olympic
Games qualifying mark ("A" or "B" standard). Only these athletes
may subsequently be nominated to the Olympic Team, based upon
the qualifying standard met by these individual athletes.
6 At the close of the qualifying period on August 9, 2004, the
Olympic Team will be determined based upon qualifying standards
met by the candidates.
7 If two or more athlete candidates in an event have met the
Olympic "A" standard by August 9, 2004, those athletes (up to 3)
will be nominated to the 2004 U.S. Olympic Team in rank order of
finish from the Olympic Trials.
8 If only one athlete candidate in an event has met the Olympic "A"
standard by August 9, 2004, only the highest placing athlete who
has met either the "A" or "B" standard will be nominated to the
2004 Olympic Team.
***whew*** hope that clears up all the issues :-)

2004 US Olympic Team Trials Men's Qualifiers
============================================
here's what we have as of now according to the USATF and my own
records. It gets a little confusing - the only ones DEFINITELY
competing so far are the ones labelled as "Qualified & Declared".
"Qualified & Open" means the athlete has submitted a mark that
surpasses the automatic qualifying height but has not officially
declared whether or not they are competing. "Provisional and Pending"
means the athlete submitted a provisional qualifying mark and has
declared their intention to compete if they are accepted into the
field. "Provisional & Open" is the lowest status - only a provisional
mark and no declaration yet...
BTW the statuses are changing as I write this out so by the time
I send this everything may have changed *sigh*
(note : my seasonal best only includes outdoor marks and may not
be the actual mark submitted for qualifying - I've tried to include
a list of differing qalifyign marks below...)

Steve Deming has a 5.50 18'00.50 from 05/10/03
Paul Litchfield has a 5.50 18'00.50 from 01/18/03
But wait - there's more! This was posted to PoleVaultPower.com...
"Unfortunately Dean's foot is giving him problems. He made a great
effort to qualify for his last OT, but injuries have gotten the
best of him. Dean will be there coaching Justin Norberg. So the
5.51m marks might make it in."
Also Scott Slover has not declared yet either.
If that's the case then Daniel Trosclair and Hans Schmidt might be
packing their bags for Sacramento as they are the next two top
provisional qualifiers. That would make a field of 24 or 25 for the
qualifying round. As of this writing Daniel has indeed declared.
Hans' status is still pending
It's getting complicated folks...

2004 US Olympic Team Trials Men's Profiles
==========================================
For now we're sticking to the top 24 entrants + 3 extras -
the 16 "Automatic & Declared"s and the 8 "Provisional and Declared"s
along with Scott Slover, Dean Starkey and Hans Schmidt
This is gonna be one tough field - we got 12 (13 if you count Dean
Starkey) 19 footers coming to Sacramento along with a whole slew of
up-and-coming talent that COULD get that high. This may be the most
deep field ever assembled for a US championship meet...

VaultnGus sez :
I said back in March
"Looks like Toby's finally making his move to the big time..."
Boy is that an understatement. Toby became the 2nd American to crack
the 6 meter barrier (19'08.25 for you metrically challenged folk) at
the Modesto Relays back in March and immediately followed that with a
5.94m 19'05.75 jump in Phoenix. Since then he won two Golden Spike
events and cracked the 19' foot barrier twice more as well. Right now
you'd have to say he's the favorite. He does well at championship
meets to - he's got an NCAA and a USATF crwon on his mantel along
with 3 NCAA runner-ups.
Plus he's just awesome to watch - check out the numerous jumps of his
archived over at NeoVault.com - there isn't a guy out there that
enjoys this as much as he does now...
And he's self-coached...

Boy did Tim's status change over the past two weeks. He tied his PR
at his old stomping grounds - Knoxville - on June 25th and then got a
new PR two days later in the friendly confines of the Jonesboro
facility of Bell Athletics. This is his 3rd shot at an Olympic berth
and his chances are better than good at making the squad.

What more can be said about this guy - h is the current American
record holder and has been the most consistent and arguably the best
vaulter from the US every year since '97. However his performances at
big qualifying meets have been frustratingly inconsistent. This is
almost definitely his last shot at making the Olympic squad. This
season though it looks like he's back into form. He hasn't hit a real
big jump this spring (for him anyway - his 5.86 19'02.75 Monday in
Jonesboro could certainly qualify) but he hasn't gone lower than 5.65
18'06.50 since mid-May. A huge jump is certainly in the works dontcha
think?

The two-time NCAA champion and now three-time 19-footer is one of the
up-and-coming talents this country has produced. He even performed
well in a brief 10 day sojourn over in Europe this spring.
Suprisingly though he has not won a meet this spring depsite 5.76,
5.80 and 5.82 marks. That don't mean anything here as a top three
finish will be good enough to send Brad to Athens.

The defending Olympic champ has has a couple of injury-plagued years
but it seems that his problems are behind him. He popped his first
19-footer since 2002 over in Spain on June 8th. However the rest of
his season has been mediocre at best. I do believe I said something
similar in 2000 before the Olympic final and we all know what
happened then...

Derek came withing a centimeter or so of his all-time PR at his home
training facility back in June and then followed it with a nice 5.70
18'08.25 at Prefontaine. As it turns out though that was only good
enough for FIFTH. This is a tough field and it's probably gonna take
19'+ to make the team. Derek is more than up to the task. He's got
big motiviation this time to make up for the last Olympic qualifier
when he lost a bid on the 2000 squad in a heartbreaking jumpoff with
Chad Harting.

been quite excellent. Will we see a return of Tye version 2001?

You know sometimes life ain't fair. The act of been conceived is a
genetic crapshoot. I got the combined genes of an accountant and a

Mendelev's chart there was a 100% certainty of that. Meanwhile Tommy
Skipper's family has athletic genes up the ying-yang. Look up various
other family members to see how talented his family tree is. He's the
owner of the scholastic pole vault record, he won the NCAA DI outdoor
crown as a frosh, he's gone 5.75 18'10.25 before his 20th birthday and
he's scored 7500+ in the decathlon as well - he's a stud. While he may
not make the team here don't be suprised to see him on several teams

Seems so long ago that Eric brok the scholastic pole vault record
(since the broken by Mr. Skipper) but the was only 1999. Sincethen
Eric has put up some decent marks but not the real big ones we
thought he was capable of. Don't get me wrong here - he's done pretty
darn awesome - he was the 2003 NCAA DI Outdoor champion and he's got a
few 5.70m 18'08.25 jumps under his bely including one back in April.
However the 19-foot barrier still eludes him. I'm glad to see him
jumping here as I'd heard rumours he was gonn ahang up his spikes
after NCAA's.
Just as a side note I sat next to him on a plane outta Reno a few
years back and this guy was HUGE! They just don't build 'em like that
out in Massachusetts...

Geez just last year this guy was pretty much a field-filler. This
spring has been a revelation. 4 weeks - 4 PR's - 5.56 18'03.00, 5.60
18'04.50, 5.70 18'08.25 and 5.75 18'10.25. Right now the only knock
is that his jumps away from the comfy confines of Earl Bell's garage
are markedly inferior - he NH'd in 3 out of his 4 meets away from
Jonesboro. However he's riding a hot streak and you never bet against
a hot streak...

Just look at this guys championship resume. Who woulda thought he'd
still be going at it in 2004? This guy has suffered so much
heartbreak at the trials. Back in 1996 I watched him take 3 nearly
flawless jumps at 19 feet only to see the bar come crashing down to
earth each time. His Kansas buddy Scott Huffman got the ticket to
Atlanta that year. Then in 2000 he ended up in a three way tie for
third that had to be settled by a jump off. Chad Harting won that
battle. Derek Miles then snuck him for the alternate spot as well.
Since then Pat has competed sparingly and there were even rumors that
he had retired. However on May 14th Pat showed why he is still here
for another go round when he topprd 5.60 18'04.50 in Phoenix. That
mark probably won't cut it this year but you can never count this guy
out.

6 frigging 9" tall. This guy is a giant. He makes 5 meter poles seem
like parasols. The former NCAA DIII champ for Allegheny College gave
the University of Arkansas some nice performances and 5 big points at
the NCAA outdoor championships. He's also a former World Indoor
championship qualifier and his PR is from that year's USATF indoor
champs. He's had quite a few hammy twinges since then and he has
numerous technical flaws that still need to be worked out but his
combintation of speed and height and suprising flexibility could get
him some HUGE jumps in the future.

than 5.45m 17'10.50 in any of his 11 meets. It'll be tough for him at

Dean Starkey's latest project seems to be bearing fruit. Justin has
had several huge jumps this year even though the resutls don't show
it. He's had some monster clearances over these reported heights (you
can see some proof over at NeoVault.com) and PR'd several times this
year including a very timely one that was good enough for 9th at the
indoors. Since then he's hit 5.70m 18'08.25 just hit 5.65m 18'06.50
two weekends ago. He's just starting to hit his potential...

What happened to the phenomenon known as LoJo? He made the '96 team
just outta college, set an American record that same year. won
himself numerous USATF championships, took a silver at the 2000
Olympics and won the 2001 World Indoor champs. Since then? ZIP. NADA.
NIX. NASAL. He's had one or two decent performances but he seems to
have all but given up the ship. Look at this year - 5 meets, 3 NH's
and only one jump over 18 feet. Goodness knows he has the talent and
he used to have the drive. Maybe he's completely sandbagging us and
he'll pop a 5.90 19'04.25 in Sacramento to make us remember what a
stud he really is. Or perhaps not

Daniel was the latest guy to be added to the fray but he barely made
the B standard and hasn't been over 5.30m 17'04.50 since March. Hey
Dan I ain't ragging on ya - this field is just too tough for ya right
now.

VaultnGus sez :
As of this writing Hans had not been added to the startlist but I
have a feeling he may be packing his bags for Sacramento if Scott
Slover doesn't declare. He's our third DIII guy to "qualify" - a
5-time NCAA DIII champion who's just waiting to break into the big
time.

Well that's it for now until Friday night when the Men's qualifying
results come in and we get the TV coverage on USA. Get the VCR's
fired up!
Stay tuned...
Well there's no predicitions here but if you wanna join the fray and
guess who will be going over to Athens there is a rather long and
heated discussion over at PoleVaultPower.com

I'm still waiting to hear from Jason Hinkin and Sean Devereaux for their unexpurgated views on what will really happen in Sacramento this weekend

looks like no Hans. that is to bad. he still had a really impressive year though. he also would have been the third lacross athlete in the trials this year. pretty impressive for a d3 school.
