Bell's pupils vault for spot on U.S. team

Team Bell hopes to become part of Team USA over the next two weekends.
Nine of Earl Bell’s pole vaulting pupils are descending on Sacramento, Calif., for the Olympic Trials that begin Friday afternoon. Each one has jumped high enough to have hopes of earning a place on the U.S. Olympic team.

Olympic veteran keeping up with Athens Games from afar

As three of his pole-vaulting pupils chase Olympic glory in Greece, Earl Bell will be tracking the competition on the Internet and on television.
Kellie Suttle and Jillian Schwartz will compete in the women’s preliminaries on Saturday and, if all goes well, in the finals Tuesday. Derek Miles vaults into action with Wednesday’s preliminaries, aiming for the men’s final on Friday, Aug. 27.
Bell is staying in touch with all three via e-mail.
