Dragila Fails to Reach Pole-Vault Final

By BOB BAUM, AP Sports Writer

ATHENS, Greece - Stacy Dragila (news - web sites) failed to make it out of pole vault qualifying Saturday, a shocking disappointment for the medal favorite and former world record holder. "This is something I should be able to do in my sleep," she said later, between sobs.

Dragila, who won the vault when it debuted as a women's event at the 2000 Olympics, missed three attempts at 14 feet, 5 1/4 inches (4.40 meters), well below her best of 15 feet, 10 inches (4.83). After her third miss, she shook her head in dismay and seemed to be stunned. Then she slowly packed up her gear, put on a cap and headed off the field.

Her shocking elimination was a blow to U.S. hopes of surpassing its total of 20 medals from the 2000 Games. It came three days after a disappointment in the men's shot put, in which the U.S. squad hoped for a sweep but ended up with only Adam Nelson's silver medal.

Dragila Crashes Out of Women's Olympic Pole Vault

By Tony Lawrence

ATHENS (Reuters) - A tearful Stacy Dragila (news - web sites) crashed out of the women's Olympic pole vault after failing to qualify Saturday.

The American defending champion passed 4.30 meters at the second attempt but then failed to clear 4.40.

World record holder Yelena Isinbayeva, however, came into the competition at 4.40 and eased over at the first go, as did her Russian team mate Svetlana Feofanova, the world champion.

Isinbayeva has broken six world records in the past seven months. Her record now stands at 4.90.

Dragila was in tears afterwards. "4.40, I should be able to make that in my sleep. It's nothing," she said. "I didn't make it and it pretty much sucks."

Dragila blamed her poor performance on a change of shoes she made after the U.S. national trials.

"They were smaller than I thought. It was a mistake on my part. You just don't make changes liked that."

She said she also had a sore Achilles tendon.

You know, Nike gave Charles Austin shoes that were too small, too, in Sydney.

Wow. Two Canadians and no Americans. Who would have thought that?

Both girls from Spain made it as well. Which is great for them and all... but quite unfortunate none of our girls got through :(

Reigning champion Dragila out of women's pole vault

ATHENS (AFP) - American pole vaulter Stacy Dragila (news - web sites), the reigning Olympic women's pole vault champion, crashed out of the qualifying competition when she was unable to clear higher than 4.30 metres.

Dragila, the self-styled Chick with a Stick, who has a best of 4.83m and was the 1999 and 2001 world champion, complained of achilles problems caused by her shoes.

"I didn't make it and that pretty much sucks," said a downcast Dragila.

Ironically, Dragila held a press conference on Thursday to promote her footwear sponsors.

Dragila was not the only big name to come up short of the 4.40m needed to go through to Monday's final.

This year's Russian champion Anastasiya Ivanova was also unable to do better than 4.30m.

However, Ivanova's compatriots Yelena Isinbayeva and Svetlana Feofanova - who did not contest the Russian championship as they were given exemption for Athens - had no problems progressing.

Both women needed only one jump in qualifying to go forward to the final.

The pair are expected to be the main protagonists for the gold medal now that Dragila is out of the picture.

Isinbayeva is the current world record holder with 4.90m, which she cleared in London last month.

Between her and Feofanova, who are well-known to be barely on speaking terms, they have improved the world record six times this year.
