RENO, Nev. - Former Husky pole vaulter Brian Sternberg, the 1963 NCAA pole vault champion and three-time world-record setter in the event, will be inducted Thursday to the North American Pole Vault Association Hall of Fame in a banquet at the Reno (Nev.) Hilton.
A 1961 graduate of Seattle's Shoreline High School, Sternberg won the 1963 NCAA pole vault title and broke the world record in the event on three occasions, the last a 16-foot, eight-inch clearance at the Compton (Calif.) Relays in June of that year. Just a sophomore, Sternberg was named to the United States' team for the annual U.S.-Russia dual meet later that summer, but saw his career cut short by a trampoline accident on July 2 that left him paralyzed below the neck.
Sternberg, 61, who lives in Seattle with his mother, Helen Sternberg, is a member of the Husky Hall of Fame and the Washington Sports Hall of Fame, and was the North American recipient of the 1963 Helms World Trophy, awarded to the top athlete on each of the six major continents.
The annual NAPVA Hall of Fame banquet is the centerpiece of two days of events leading up to the 2005 National Pole Vault Summit, a two-day vaulting festival in the Hilton ballroom featuring the United States' top vaulters of all ages. This year's Summit, scheduled for Jan. 21-22, includes several current UW vaulters and former Husky Brad Walker, the sixth-place finisher at the 2004 U.S. Olympic Trials.
