I have a good one of him from 96 when he broke a pole and a peace of fiberglass hit him in the eye. He told me he lost sight in his eye for a week.
I also have his last jump at the Olympic trials that year where he ran his 10m a second. I don't thing you can actually see his legs they are moving so fast. LON

How tall was Duplantis actually? I've heard he was only 5'6", though I don't know if that's true.

The size of a man is better measured by the size of their accomplishments than the height of the top of their head.

This just in from Greg Duplantis himself, posted on another forum. He had been asked just exactly how tall he was when he first made 19'. Here's his reply (in quotation marks):
"It appears I am getting shorter as I get older. Literally. But, at the time I jumped 5.80 19-1/4 I was exactly 5'-6''. I have seen my height quoted as 5-10" to now an alltime low 5-4". I grew an amazing inch from high school . I graduated,at 5-5, weighing 125lbs."
Short vaulters take heart!

Duplantis in the Day!

Let me put some closure to your rumers about old Dupo as we called him back at LSU. I'm sure there are a number of vaulters who had the opportunity to vault with and against Greg. He and I go way back to many high school, AAU and college bouts on the runway. Greg is everything and more than his tall 5'6" rumers.
He truely was one of the most explosive vaulters off the pole and the folks "in the day" are lucky he wasn't bigger. He could run like the wind and used huge poles. He would rock back so hard on the pole that we use to tell him that his head was scraping the runway.
I have many great memories of high school meets, trips out of town with the track club and crazy stuff at LSU.
This will put his explosiveness in prospective. He obviously has many proven record now on the books, but my most amazing memory of Greg was his undisputed record on the "fungo" pole. You new vaulters call it a "training" pole. Back in the day, they were short and sort of flexible. pretty close to the flex of a car antenna. Well, we used to have competitions with an 11 ft fungo. You could only 3 step the approach. Well, Duplantis smoked everybody. I'm not going to even post the heigth that I remember, because....well, a few of you won't beleive it. Let's just say it was probably a world record for push off!
