Homestead junior pole-vaulter Katie Veith is ranked No. 1 in the nation, but last year’s state runner-up says she has even loftier goals when the outdoor track and field season begins.
Six inches may not seem like a lot. But for Homestead junior Katie Veith, it is significant.
Veith, maybe the best high school female pole-vaulter in the nation, has already cleared the 14-foot mark indoors this year. It marks only the second time a prep female pole-vaulter has gone at least 14 feet. It also ranks her No. 1 in the nation.
But Veith is hoping for those six more inches. That’s her goal outdoors: 14 feet, 6 inches.
The question will be whether Veith can get that extra six inches. Jumping indoors and outdoors are often not related. Weather conditions and other factors make the two different.
“I basically have to start at the beginning for outdoors,â€Â
