Here is an article on Shin Splints from Trackshark.com. It's targeted at distance runners, but it gives you a good basic understanding of shin splints.

I had stress fractures from those puppies my first three years of college. I had orthotics made which didn't improve the situation. Finally, I did three things 1) did all of my warm up on a stationary bike, 2) ran stairs rather than work outs on the track (prevented heel strike), 3) taped my arches. I've never had the problem to that extent again.
Technically, however pain on the medial portion of the tibia are not considered shin splints. You look up shin splints in any orthopedic manual and they are talking about anterior compartment syndrome from the tibialis anterior muscle. which would cause pain on the lateral anterior portion of the shin bone/tibia, not the medial portion of the tibia.
