Long Jump Training

I am planning on training the long jump over the summer, and was wondering if anyone can give me some advice. I am moderately fast (~9.3 m/s I think) and not entirely incapable of jumping (high jumped 1.77m or ~5'10" the first time I tried High jump) however my long jump pr is a staggering 5.69m, or just short of the pole vault A standard in the US. Sad I know, considering I've been jumping over 4.90m from a 6 left approach. I feel that being more capable as a long jumper will lead to a better takeoff in general, as well as increased confidence in a free takeoff. How should I train the long jump to maximize its results in the pole vault. Thanks.

P.S. No making fun of me :P

PM David Johnston. I believe the early research for the mid mark chart was for the long jump. Anyway I know he knows it like crazy. He might be able to lead you down the right roads if you're planning on working on this. Good luck.............Mike

Check out you tube on long jump training. You see jumping from a run is a learned activitity. Track Technique is a good resource for that. The run-up has little to do with the skill of jumping from a run. It does with jumping from a run and hitting a board. The best long jumper/PV guy was 25+ and 5.42. Dec. was just under 8k

I'm a little confused by this, can you explain what you mean?

He is talking about the translate-ability of PV skills gained from LJ training?

As in you can have a great PV takeoff and be a terrible long jumper, and vice versa?

I mean that teaching someone to jump from a run (taking off anyplace) is different than trying to jump from a run AND hitting a takeoff board or a pV takeoff. The previous must be taught first to help the second.
