Gymnastics training

took the video camera into the gymnastics room the other day. couple drills we do (nothing unique or mindblowing). just thought id share. as a team we are in the gymnastics room about twice a week, and most lift twice a week. get combination of strength and functional strength. we also do a ton of abs on the high bars and such. plus a lot of these will work your core, as well as improving your swing or general co-ordination

Nice videos! Thanks for posting.

Try doing the Bubka's by not going all the way down. Go down until your knees or shins are at the bar and then go back up. It's a much better workout as you can't cheat with the swing.

I think it's good to do it both ways. You can work on different things.

yeah we do them both ways. these particular ones are for trying to swing long and quick, while the others are more strength. slow twitch vs fast twitch training

I agree with you. Both ways are good! Just wanted to give you another one if you didn't already do it.

hi , its tatif, I would like to ask a question, can we jump 17" or more without doing gymnastics ?

I come from a very big gymnastics backround so I don't know if I can completely answer that but I think gymnastics is one of the best things to do for pole vault. But the answer to you question is Yes you can jump high with out gymnastics

You can actually jump 17 inches without a pole. Who needs gymnastics? Just joking! Gymnastics builds a very strong core which is crucial to being a good vaulter.

I think the need for gymnastics is very individual, and that's why training programs shouldn't be so "cookie-cutter" with every vaulter on the team doing the same exact thing based on convenience. My freshman year of college, I had no gymnastics background whatsoever coming in, and that year we spent 3 days a week in the gymnastics room on every apparatus they had. I learned how to swing and turn, instead of block and arch, and improved over a foot and a half and won conference. I tried that same approach for the next 3 years though and only improved 5 more inches in 3 years. After realizing that I wasn't moving very big poles or high grips, I changed my focus to strength and speed after college, and improved another 15" in the years that followed. So for me, strength and speed work make up about 50% of my training 25% on technique, and 10% on endurance, 10% on gymnastics, and 5% on flexibility.

In my coaching, it's the same approach. While some things are done in groups, I try to individualize certain elements of training to improve each vaulter's weaknesses. Some will spend more time on gymnastics (usually those without much background in it) while others will spend more time on sprint mechanics (usually my former gymnasts), and so on and so forth.

thanks for the reply. I would like te see some videos of gymnastices work , if you can give some links or web pages?also videos about pole vault trainning.
