Brad Walker, defending world champion in the pole vault has withdrawn from the competition due to injury. Here is the statement we received from USATF:
Defending world champion Brad Walker on Thursday morning withdrew from men's pole vault competition due to injuries sustained July 28 at the Herculis meet in Monaco. While competing in Monaco, Walker landed partly off the mat on one of his attempts, causing his hips to hit the ground. The result was trauma to his public symphis joint. According to Walker's agent, Peter Stubbs, "Every time he runs, it causes movement of the joint and extreme pain. To avoid a potentially career-ending injury, Brad has made the very difficult decision to withdraw."

Hooker ready to compete despite injury
AAP
August 20, 2009, 3:36 pm
Reigning Olympic champion Steve Hooker is set to defy a thigh injury and have a crack at qualifying for the men's pole vault final at the world athletics championships on Thursday.
The torn adductor muscle has prevented Hooker, the Australian team captain, from doing any vaulting during training in the last 10 days.
But after completing a practice session under the watchful eye of coach Alex Parnov early on Thursday morning, the pair decided it was worth having a crack at the qualifying round starting at 10.10am local time (1810 AEST).
The plan is for Hooker to have his first jump at 5.65m.
The automatic qualifying height to advance to the final on Saturday evening (Sunday morning AEST) is 5.75m.

The (British) TV crew completely failed to mention anything about Brad Walker one way or the other. Maybe they didn't get the memo yet.

IAAF:
10:25 Hysong - How are the wind conditions in the vault?
10:25 Moderator - It's relatively still, but there are some gusts. Looks like the vaulters will be getting breezes, if any, coming from their left as they approach the bar.
10:26 Moderator - Also, check the wind readings for the decathlon hurdles; a headwind for the hurdlers is coming from the vaulters' left. A tailwind comes from their right.
10:26 peterengland - Todays pole vault is the qualification round, 34 taking part. The automatic qualifying height is set at 5.75m with a minimum of 12 jumpers going through to the final (18:15 Saturday Berlin time) Todays round is scheduled to last for 90 minutes. But we will see after all the other jump contests have overran.
10:26 brown - regards Steve Hooker - He will be entering at 5.65m (auto qualifying)...he doesn't know if he will be able to do many jumps due to an adductor injury sustained just over a week ago. It's very much all or nothing for him these championships.
10:27 Moderator - We have nine clearances so far at the opening height of 5.25m in the pole vault. First vaults now at 5.40m; everybody still "alive" at this point.
10:28 Hysong - Wind from their left will be much better than from the right. (assuming most are right handed)
