It is interesting to see how each vaulter chose his entry point and when to pass. I don't know that I understand it, but it is interesting.

-It's all about how you're feeling
-How your last jump session went and perhaps
- how the wind is blowing
-as in Walker's case (how confident you feel-having jumped 5.92 two weeks ago.

yeah, that's kind of funny.
They started differently and then they were jumping on the fact that they were hoping to out jump each other with a greater hight. big risks, if they were jumping for places. They could of been think of jumping higher and not jump as much, saving energy.

If you look on the athletics australia website www.athletics.com.au there is a highlight real of day 2 in the videos section and it is near the beginning of that.

thats a good lookin jump... but that haircut's gotta go.

Walker steals Hooker's thunder

World number one Steven Hooker was forced to play second fiddle to American Brad Walker last night in the men's pole vault final at the national track and field championships in Brisbane.

Hooker, as the top-placed Australian, took his first national title but his best leap of 5.50 metres was not good enough to topple the visiting Walker, who won the competition with a vault of 5.95m.

Walker's countryman Toby Stevenson was third with 5.50m while Hooker's training partner Paul Burgess was the next best-placed Australian in fourth position with 5.35m.

Walker, the 2006 world indoor champion, did not make his entry until the bar was raised to 5.70m, a height at which he cleared with his second attempt.

Hooker had opened his account at 5.50m, but the Commonwealth Games gold medallist failed on all three attempts at 5.80m.

Walker, who finished second to Hooker at the Melbourne A-Series meet last week, passed at this height and instead went for 5.95m, which he managed before trying to set a new personal best of 6.04m.

However, the 25-year-old failed to clear but still posted a morale-boosting win over Hooker with the world championships season yet to get into full swing.

Walker steals world lead with 5.95

American Brad Walker was superb in winning the Australian Pole Vault title with a great second-attempt clearance of 5.95m, the world's leading leap this year and an Osaka A-qualifier of course. He opened at 5.70m which he cleared at his second attempt, then passed to 5.80m which he also made on the second effort.

Australian Steve Hooker (5.50) and another American, Toby Stevenson (tied for second also at 5.50m) and World No.2 merit ranked Australian Paul Burgess (5.35m) were disappointed at being reduced to mere spectators as Walker failed in three attempts at 6.04m.
