London 2012 is pretty well on his doorstep, but reigning Olympic and World champion Steve Hooker is focused on his 2011 debut at the Herculis Monaco Samsung Diamond League meeting on 22 July.

“Monaco will be my absolute first competition since last October.

“It is jumping straight in at the deep end, I guess. But there’s no better place to start than against the best in the world in a competition that’s virtually a world championships final. I’ve been missing the adrenalin of competition, that feeling of being out there and being competitive.

“I’ve been settling in nicely at my London base since arriving (on 23 June). The first two weeks were really a productive time; I got a lot of good training done.

“The house is in Lea Valley, close to all the London 2012 venues. The Games’ facilities are between here and central London. It’s a good place with great cooking facilities. Diet can often be the hardest thing to get on top of when you’re travelling. So that’s a really positive thing.

“Where I’m training is one of the high performance centres. Steve Lewis trains there and I train with him when he comes out. We’ll train together when we can.

“It’s good. I’ve had a couple of good vaulting sessions over here. I’ve got one more vaulting session to do on Friday before I head over to Monaco next Wednesday.

“We’ll have some opportunity to go and check out the Olympic facilities, the stadium and such, over summer. At some stage it will be good to get inside the stadium and visualise what’s to come, what’s going to happen there. I’ll be doing that as part of my 2012 preparation.

“First, it’s Monaco. I had thought about doing Paris but, in the end, the decision was that I needed to get some training done. Paris DL had tough conditions, it wouldn’t have been an ideal way to start as it turned out.

“It’s not easy to get a good result: you look at the guys who have been vaulting well all year, they struggled there.

“I was happy with the decision in the end. On the day of the Paris meeting I did a vaulting session, a good session, which was probably more productive for me in terms of preparation for Daegu. I was happy to miss that one and now I’m looking forward to one more vault session and getting myself fresh and ready for Monaco.

“It’ll be good. There’s no better place to start. I always go into my first competition aiming to get a big result and that’s how I’m going to be approaching this one. I’m going to go out and have a good crack at it.

“There’s already a lot of Australians doing well here, which is motivating for me. There were some great results in Paris and Birmingham which I enjoyed watching.

“Kim Mickle got her world championships and Olympic qualifiers in Paris. That was a really good result for her and she can head home now and do her final preparation in Perth.

“Sally Pearson’s two runs in Birmingham showed she is ready to go and get it done in a major championships. Sally was unlucky in 2009, hurting her back a few weeks out from the world champs. Then she struck a really high-quality race and finished fifth.

“This year has gone really well for her. She’s healthy, she looks like she’s in best shape she has ever been in, and she’s hurdling well. She said there’s more to come, so I think we’ll see more improvement.

“The other one that was really pleasing was Craig Mottram, to see him and Collis Birmingham pull out qualifying times for the world championships. And Jarrod Bannister threw over 82 (metres) in the javelin as well.

“So, from team perspective, from the athletes we’d expect to see, it was a really good weekend for Australia. It’s great to see that it’s all coming together.”

Jumping, not wins, goal for Hooker
RAY WILSON, The West Australian

It's not a case of how high but how many for world champion pole vaulter Steve Hooker when he competes for the first time in nine months in Monaco tomorrow morning.

The Perth-based 29-year-old will take a lead from Australian singer Paul Kelly's famous song "From little things big things grow" as he begins preparations to defend his world title in Daegu, South Korea, starting on August 27.

Hooker, who said his aim was to get back into the swing of competition in the IAAF Diamond League meet after his long lay-off following his gold medal performance at the Commonwealth Games in Delhi, faces a world-class field in his comeback.

Hooker's arch rival Renaud Lavillenie, the young French gun who shapes as the Australian's heir apparent, is leading the competition in the Diamond League series after winning events in Paris, Lausanne and Rome.

Lavillenie, 24, who claimed Hooker's No.1 world ranking at the end of 2010, recorded the best indoor vault of the year in Paris in March when he cleared 6.03m and he also had three other indoor jumps of 5.90m or better.

Brad Walker, the American who is a close friend of Hooker and a former world champion, set the world leading outdoor mark of 5.84m last month while German Malte Mohr and Frenchman Romain Mesnil are both rated highly.

"I've got pretty limited expectations, the main goal is to get the swing of being in a competition again," Hooker said.

"I'm not thinking about jumping high, I'm thinking about entering the competition at a low height to try and jump a lot of heights. That's the goal, have as many jumps as I can and get back into the swing."

Before leaving Perth a month ago for his London base, Hooker, who holds every major pole vault title, said his first competitions would be "almost a half-training, half- competition kind of set up rather than going in with a full high-level competition strategy".

Hooker happy to be back vaulting

Australian pole vault king Steve Hooker admitted Thursday he was not at 100 percent following an injury-enforced eight month layoff.

The current world, Olympic and Commonwealth champion last competed at the Commonwealth Games in New Delhi in October and has since spent his time trying to fully rehabilitate his knee.

"All last season I was carrying a knee injury and had to repair my body and let it heal," said the 29-year-old, who is scheduled to compete in a maximum of three events before next month's world championships in Daegu, South Korea.

"It's a fulltime job getting healthy and back into shape.

"I've spent eight months doing it, seeing lots of physios, getting massages, needles stuck in me and getting scans. It was a complicated injury.

"But I've been training the whole time as well, although I've only been able to jump in the last two to three months. I've been doing lots of running and gym work. I would have liked to vault more but I couldn't.

"I've got a good strength and running base for this year and next year at the Olympics."

Hooker, however, refused to say what height he would be gunning for on Friday and was coy when asked on how many cylinders he was firing.

"It's such a long time away from competition and I've made a lot of changes," he said.

"Generally my first competition of the season is a good one, but it's difficult to say this year.

"If I get there (Daegu) I'll be in better shape than in Berlin (host of the 2009 worlds), so that's an improvement.

"But it's not all about being 100 per cent fit, I'm going there 100 per cent committed and that's all I can do."

He added: "I'm in good enough shape. My running's okay, it's the jumping which affects me. I have to be careful with my competitions and not jump too much.

"It's important to get through the next month for Daegu."

Hooker also admitted that this season's pole vault had not been exceptional fare given the largely unfavourable weather conditions at several meets.

"I haven't missed much. There've been windy and rainy conditions. It's been quite nice sat on the sofa watching that!" said Hooker, who has spent the last month training indoors in London with reputed vaulting coach Steven Lewis.

Hooker also admitted he had not kept in touch by email with his rivals when rehabilitating in Australia.

"Technology's not my thing," he said, tongue apparently not in cheek. "I'm a bit of a caveman. I'm my own island."
