POLE vaulter Roslinda Samsu soared to new heights when she produced a smashing performance to better the Sea Games record, and set a national record at the Grand Premio Clubs Athletics Championships in Torent, Spain on Saturday.
Roslinda cleared 4.20 metres, a massive improvement from her numerous attempts to just clear 4.0 metres. Her new mark bettered the 3.95m set by Indonesia’s Ni Putu Desy Margawati at the 2003 Sea Games in Vietnam. Roslinda also smashed her own national record of 3.91m.

"We are elated with her performance and this (the new mark) will motivate her to scale greater heights," said Malaysian AAU (MAAU) general manager Lt Col (Rtd) Abdul Hamid Barkat Ali yesterday.

"Our team leader (coaching coordinator J.V. Jayan) will contact the Valencia AAA to ratify her achievement."

PETITE pole vaulter Roslinda Samsu has soared to greater heights in Spain when she broke not only the national mark but also bettered the SEA Games record three days ago.
The Kedah-born athlete, who is on a training-cum-competition stint in Spain alongside five other athletes, cleared 4.20m in the Torent 1st Grand Premio Club meet near Valencia, nine days after her 23rd birthday.

The SEA Games mark is 3.95m set by Indonesia’s Ni Putu Desy Margawati en route to the gold medal in Hanoi two years ago.

The good news was relayed to the Malaysian Amateur Athletics Union (MAAU) by training co-ordinator J.V. Jayan yesterday.

Roslinda, who is a member of the National Sports Council’s Gemilang 2006 squad, had earlier tied for first placing in a meet in Alicante with a height of 3.80m by using a borrowed pole after the team’s equipment arrived late due to logistical problems.

The lass from Padang Terap then finished sixth with a height of 3.60m in Madrid.

In Alicante, sprinter Mohd Latif Nyat clocked 10.70s in the 100m, Mohd Zafril Zuslaini (400m) 47.97s, Robani Hassan (110m hurdles) 14.59s and Teh Weng Chang (pole vault) 4.90m.

While Roslinda cleared the mark, her compatriots were forced to face a strong headwind in Valencia.

Still Robani finished first in the 110m hurdles, clocking 14.49s while Zafril was also first in 200m with a time of 21.87s.

Latif was second in the 100m with a time of 11.01s, no thanks to a muscle strain while long jumper Ngew Sin Mei posted 6.04m to finish third.

Jayan told MAAU the organisers in Spain were impressed with the Malaysian team’s performance.
