Olympic champ Liu Xiang from China set a championship record in the men's 110 meter hurdles on Friday as his teammates continued to dominate medals on the second day of the 16th Asian Athletics Championships.

All four athletes who broke previous records at the Incheon Munhak Stadium came from China, which stands atop the medal standings with 10 gold medals, four silver and five bronze.

In the women's pole vault, China's Gao Shuying broke her own record, clearing 4.53 meters (4.96 yards).

Asian record

Gao Shuying bettered her own record of 4.52m, set in Beijing in 2001, on way to the Asian record and the gold. She entered the contest at 4.10, cleared it on her first attempt and then went for 4.30m by which time she was the lone contestant left in the field. She scaled that height, too, and straightaway went for the record.
To a spontaneous round of applause from a sizeable gathering in the 52,000-capacity stadium, Gao went over the bar, came down and did a victory jig.

The 26-year-old Chinese had won the title in 2002 also as well as winning the Busan Asian Games gold. She was fifth at the Helsinki World championships with her season best, till then, of 4.50m.

Roslinda Soars To Bronze In Pole Vault, Noraseela On Course For Gold

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 2 (Bernama) -- Roslinda Samsu soared 4.10m above the Munhak Stadium in Incheon, South Korea, to win Malaysia's first medal in the women's pole vault event of the 16th Asian Track and Field Championships Friday while 400m hurdler Noraseela Mohd Khalid remained on course for a gold.

The win by Roslinda, the national record holder with a height of 4.20m, lifted the gloom in the Malaysian camp after six other athletes who competed in their respective finals failed to finish among the medal winners.

Roslinda, a silver medallist in the Asian Indoor Championships in Tehran, Iran, last year had also won a silver medal during the 2001 Kuala Lumpur SEA Games and a bronze at the Vietnam SEA Games two years ago.

"Roslinda's win and Noraseela's good performance more or less made up for the loss of other Malaysian athletes who were in action today," the Malaysian Amateur Athletics Union Vice-President Rajemah Sheikh Ahmad told Bernama Friday.

The women's pole vault was won by China's Gao Shuying who soared to a new Asian Record with a height of 4.53m.
