Isinbayeva, Williams-Darling and Campbell declare for Birmingham
Monday 28 November 2005
London, UK - Russia’s World and Olympic Pole Vault champion Yelena Isinbayeva, the World Athlete of the Year for the second consecutive season, has declared for the Norwich Union Grand Prix in Birmingham next February, Britain’s premier indoor meeting. Also announced for the meeting are fellow Athens Olympic champions Tonique Williams-Darling from the Bahamas, and Veronica Campbell of Jamaica.
The Russian who is the overall IAAF World Ranked number one athlete could top the $300,000 mark in World record bonuses achieved at UK meetings when she competes in Birmingham. The 23-year-old will attempt her eighth World record mark established in UK Athletics’ events at the National Indoor Arena meeting on 18 February, after claiming her first in Gateshead two and a half years ago. Overall, Isinbayeva has a total of 19 World records (inc. outdoor and indoor marks) to her credit during her career.
Isinbayeva became the first woman in history to clear the 5m mark in the Pole Vault when scaling that height at the Norwich Union London Grand Prix this summer, and she then raised that mark to 5.01m when winning the World title in Helsinki.
However, Isinbayeva’s World Indoor record stands significantly lower at 4.90m, and UK Athletics confirmed today that any World record achieved in Birmingham will be honoured with a $30,000 bonus. Her current haul from UKA meetings stands at $280,000, in addition to any prize money and promotional fees earned.
Isinbayeva said: "The British meetings have always been good to me and I seem to perform well whenever I go there. The crowds always get right behind me which makes it easier to achieve those World record heights.â€Â
