Well i know a lot of guys guys can give you the specifics, but if you are asking if you jump "up" or "in" at the plant, you should definitely strive to jump up. Just jumping "in" is a great way to break a pole. Think of what you try to do when you long jump, and its pretty much the same thing. You want explosive power while jumping at a good, high angle off the ground. That doesnt mean slow down and jump like a high jumper, but definitely dont jump in with no take off angle. I always just run as tall and fast as i can, but at take off i put all my energy into a good impulse off the ground.

Yeah, you want to jump up and be tall at takeoff.

if you just jump up theres no forward penetration shouldn't you jump kinda both up and in like vault3rboy said like a long jump

If you jump up properly (not braking), your momentum from your run will carry you into the pit. There is no need to try to jump forward as long as you are not slamming on the brakes in an effort to jump up.

Exactly what Becca said. Try this, run full speed on a runway without a pole and try to jump straight up. Its not possible, and i would bet you wont get more than 1 1/2 feet off the ground. Thats because you already have forward momentum, and if you were able to put all that energy upward, you would either go 9 feet in the air or fracture your shin!

. The whole idea is to run as fast as you can while under CONTROL, so that when you do hit the take off, you can hit it with a better angle. Thats why people are better off only going as fast as they can control on the runway so they can hit the take off harder.
