I'm not too impressed by the discussion, but the numbers are very interesting, and definitely need further analysis.

with the chest moving forward but kept behind the left arm in order to avoid an
early forward swing (frames 13, 14). A deep and prolonged hang is necessary
and important because it allows to use a higher grip and a harder pole. In the
shown vault the duration of the hang is 0.105 sec. and makes up 8.6% of the
total support phase. This is longer than in the previously analyzed sequences.
This jumps out at me the most. I contend this portion was seen to appear longer b/c of a better step and more active takeoff which of course imparts more energy into the pole...and not an effort to "hang" or prolong the "hanging stage" to jump on stiffer poles.

This paper is exactly the kind of metric analysis ... based on the speed of the various vault parts ... that we're talking about in the Video Metrics thread ... here ...
http://www.polevaultpower.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=38&t=17113&p=124533#p124533I like metrics in this paper so much that I'm going to cross-reference this thread to the Video Metrics thread.
