This isn't me, but I was wondering what all of you would have to say on this jump:

http://www.cortland.edu/athletics/mtrack/zanettipolevault2009.mov

The only information I know is that the bar is at 16' 7"

I want to use this almost as a model because it is clear, concise, and very slow. Let me know your thoughts

I strongly suggest modeling yourself after Bubka's '6.01' jump instead.

You can find it on stabhoch.com in a quicktime format.

haha, my dad's friend emailed him this a few days ago!

This guy has a lot of good technique, but I think his run is probably the weakest part of his vault. He starts off with his head and shoulders down and really doesn't pick himself completely up. The last few steps are long and stretched, and his last step is pretty terrible, he's leaning really far back, but he recovers a little from that. If he sped up his last few steps (which would cause him to be straighter up at take-off), he would add a lot more energy into his vault.

As long as he isn't blocking out at take-off, which I'm pretty sure he isn't, he has a very nice technical model!

How in the hell did that bar stay on the short pegs!? LOL Very nice jump, nice to see Zanetti crack a big jump and it came at the right time for him.

It's so easy to be picky when a vault is slowed down so much, so it's important to say he's doing a lot of things right and that he is a great jumper.

But yankee i would NOT suggest modeling yourself after him, or ANY jumper. You need to understand what it is you are trying to accomplish and model yourself after your own mental model of the vault, because no one has done it perfectly, although some have come very close. There is still energy leaked... which is only human nature. Just take parts of the jump that are good from many different vaulters and create your own image of what the vault should look like.

His run isn't terrible in my opinion.... a little stiff and a lower pole drop than ideal, then a late plant. Hands should be completely over his head just before his TAKE OFF knee begins to come down for his take off. He is under, according to petrovian standards, isn't as long as he could be during his swing as a result, but still manages to punch his hips upward very nicely and get VERY well connected with the pole. I would emulate his "bubka" ability in the second half of his inversion more than anything else in his jump. Although his hands seem to be doing what they should be doing as well, so there are two parts i feel he is close to having "mastered".

First, a HUGE contratulations to Jake Zanitti for winning the Div 3 title with this vault. Here's the full story ... http://www.cortlandreddragons.com/news/2009/5/21/MTRK_0521092607.aspx.

I'm not going to say it was a lucky jump ... becuz he earned the title that he won with it ... but did you notice how the bar bounced up and ONTO the top of the standard (above the peg), then bounced back down onto the peg again?

But I don't think his is a technique to emulate. If you like slo-mo, then you can find lots of Bubka vids in slo-mo too.

He's leaning back far too much, and gets sucked under. This is why he stalled on top.

LHS (from Florida) - you would like this guy's technique, as he extends his lead leg out almost straight ... like you're trying to do ... and like Stevenson. But Yankee - I don't think you should emulate this. At least not til LHS breaks Stevenson's PR! :D

Thanks for the feedback here!

Anyone have a better website where I could find tons of slow mo vids?
It just makes it 10x easier for me to understand when I slow things down

Yankee, you can view any QuickTime vid frame-by-frame by using the left and right arrow keys on your keyboard.

If the YouTube (or any other) vid isn't in the QuickTime format (which you can quickly figure out by trying the left/right arrow keys), then you can download the vid to your PC, then convert the format to QuckTime.

I describe how to do that here ... http://www.polevaultpower.com/forum/search.php?t=17113.

It's called stabhochsprung.com, and it can be like a drug sometimes... It can be very addicting, eventually you need more and more of it, and it tends to make you very happy indeed! :D

Kirk, if you watch a little closer it never lands on the top of the standard, that is in fact just the crossbar waving and wiggling before landing back on the peg... take a closer look and you'll see what i mean ;)

He has some parts of his jump that are okay, some things that are not so hot and some things that are really solid. However i would like to the see the vault at full speed. Excellent Vault to win a D3 title. Good show... If anyone has a tuck and shoot model of the same bar that would be fun. 505 --> 507
