I was wondering what is that black tape that most of the Europeans use. I see vaulters like Yelena and Burgess using and it looks really sticky. Does anyone know what it is?

probably regular old cloth electrical tape...friction tape it's called, I use it still, a throwback from the 60's, we used to use it on steel poles..cheap too from your local hardware store...makes your hands black though haha

We used to wrap our hockey sticks with it too.

Do they "soften" it up, making it tacky using lighter fluid?

Lighter fluid is used when regular tape is wrapped sticky-side out. When the tape gets dirty, it looses its tackiness. However, lighter fluid refreshes all the adhesiveness. Depending on how much you put on it, you have to wait a few minutes for it to evaporate and get tacky.

yea, if you ever need to hold on, or someones hand is slipping, put the tape, stickyside out, with lighterfluid. that'll do some serious sticking. but even just normal tape with lighterfluid isnt bad...

The lighter fluid leaves a nice black crust on your hands you have to chip away. Nice.

Rubbing alcohol works well and doesn't leave quite the thickness of black crust.
