pole vault "pit"

Has anyone else thought it is odd that the landing surface is called a "pit" when it most obviously isn't one? Technically, I guess it is the opposite of a pit. I don't think even the first landing areas that were turned over sod could properly be termed a "pit".

I think I have too much time on my hands today.

Achtung, in the OLD days we actually had a pit. It was used to contain the sawdust. Of course it didn't!

In the PORTaPIT Catalog where you would find "PV & HJ pits" we call models "Landing Systems" LOL
