Crossbar Rules Change??

Does the following mean that new crossbars are needed? It sounds like they can't have the flat rubber ends that make the ends square.

RULE 2/EQUIPMENT 41
Crossbar Shape, Composition
ARTICLE 4. The crossbar shall be circular and made of suitable material.
The ends of the crossbar shall be smooth and shall not be covered with rubberor any other material that has the effect of increasing the friction between the surface of the crossbar and the supports.
Crossbar Dimensions
ARTICLE 5. The diameter of the crossbar shall be 30 (±1) millimeters.
The crossbar shall be 4.50 (±0.02) meters in length, shall have a maximum weight of 2.25 kilograms, shall have no bias, and when in place, shall sag a maximum of 3 centimeters. The ends of the crossbar shall be constructed in such a way that a flat surface of 30 to 35 millimeters by 15 to 20 centimeters is designed for the purpose of placing the bar on the pegs of the uprights.

Sounds like they might be converting to plastic tips. Not sure if it matters about square ends though.

Eventually, if they make enough alterations to the rules (short pegs, slick bars), it WILL be impossible for someone to break any major records.

Impossible to Voltz? or to break a record?

Even with the new rules, I am prety sure that if you don't touch the bar that it still stays up.

True! But how many records have been set where the bar was made clean? When they made the drastic changes to the javelin, didn't they start over on the records?

We might be jumping the gun on this anyway. Maybe it wasn't well written, or maybe we just aren't reading it correctly.

We might be jumping the gun a little bit, but i have seen (many many times) a few different videos of Bubka jumping OVER 20' (not to mention his 6m+ jumps either) without touching or knicking (nicking?) the bar at all. I dont think we should complain about crossbars until someone else clears 20'

for every record that was clean i am sure there is at least one record that was made with a bar moving a little bit

This was from the 2006 NCAA rules book. The section they discuss equipment, etc. Did not see it in the 2005 book so I was wondering what it was about.

does anyone even produce a crossbar resembles that description at all???

the only way to technically follow this rule is to use a material that has a coefficient of friction equal to or less than that of the the cross bar material with the material of the pegs.

here is a link to a site with a list of coefficients for clean surfaces, but who really has a clean set of standards (lacking oxidation)?
