I went to york and graduated in 2000 (with Sage and all those XC guys) I did cross country, wrestling and track there and at the end of h.s. decided to try something different: as cracking top 5 for distance involved going 1:56 in the half, 4:30 in the mile and 9:30ish for 2 miles...So i tried pole vaulting. Just graduated from Millikin and am coaching at Fenton now, I will help with York too, like I did when in college. I posted to your question in the other forum too FYI.
Fight the good fight: It's nice to be great but it's far greater to be nice.

I think the poles this most commonly effects is UCS Spirit poles. If you live in a state where the officials will not accept the coach placing a max handhold band on the pole, call Spirit and they might have some suggestions.

This situation happened to me last year during Sections I believe. Luckily there were other poles I could borrow. UCS was more than kind enough to send "official" weight lables down once they could confirm the legitamacy of the pole. ie. year, flex, legnth, etc.

My sophomore tied his overall PR (10'6") on a 13'6 140 pacer and he weighs about 140. If he holds 6"-1' down he mashes it a bit much and gets no penetration so he was holding 2 feet down (to get into the pit better, but his bend was pretty weak and the standards were at 45-50cm all day). We have a 14' 140 pacer and a 14' 145 spirit...Should I move him to the 14' 140 pacer but have him hold at 12'6" - 13' on it?

Moving him to a 14' 140 and having him hold a foot higher is not a good idea for some one who is having problems moving the pole the 14' 140 is 7-10 stiffer. He needs to learn to move that 13'6" better with out loading the pole so much ;)

Also, I have another vaulter who is using a 13' 125 sky (blowing through), and a 12'6" 130 pacer. He also blows through this pole, big bend and real deep penetration...He made 9' and 9'6" by shooting forward and at 10' kept hitting it kicking out and at it with his butt or thighs with standards all the way back. He was holding about 9" down but holding any lower would have just pushed him in more and not up. Holding up would have reduced penetration, but 'mush' the pole too much and it would not unbend at all...Any suggestions? Shooting out and not getting upside down enough is his #1 problem though but the pole doesn't help... He weighs 120. We also have a 14'6" 120 (hold 13'6"?) sky and a 13'6" 140 pacer (near top?).

borrow a pole none of these is a really good choice.

i know u said he doesn't penetrate holding up on that 13-6 stick but make sure he is really tall and taking off that runway cause i have not penetrated before and put a huge bend in the stick but it was from a low takeoff and i "dumped" on it, don't worry everyone I don't do that anymore. SO as Robert said, make sure he properly uses it.

To the origional poster...I coach and run off home competitions. At the beginning of the season we vault the boys & girls together...start the bar at 5' and the boys enter when the bar reaches a entry height they desire. The down side it that there may be considerable time between warm-up and jumps by advanced vaulters. When the bar reaches 11'-12' I pause the competition to allow those vaulters who have not yet enterd to take 2-3 warm-ups. I know that this is contrary to the "rules" but I feel that as the rules are now written they "punish" the better vaulters and create an atmosphere of unsafe vaulting. A few years ago, I had Chris Smith and John Russell on the same HS team. We went to a meet, they warmed up and 2.5 hours later they, along with some other fine jumpers, were still waiting to make their first jump! If you run into this kind of meet keep your vaulters doing towel drills every now and then to try and stay sharp. If you adopt this policy, be sure to advise the head official and coaches from other teams. I have never had an official of coach deny my policy. Any thoughts out there on this?

In my meets...if you come in over a foot and a half above starting height, you get two warmup vaults before your first height. at least, thats how it usually works, sometimes they do one foot, sometimes two...but I think I've been allowed to warmup in any meet with a lot of vaulters where I came in later...

yeah, i think technically its 3 heights, but since everything goes by 6 inches lol...and those warmups are sans bar as well, sometimes its only one jump, sometimes two, sometimes i've even seen my guys take three...
