Video of Yelena

Unread postby joanplanas » Tue Feb 14, 2006 10:21 am

My coach took some videos of the competition. I uploaded to mi site Yelena's 4'81 jump, if you want to see it: http://www.joanplanas.net/en/index_en.html (at the videos section).
Later I'll upload the winner jump of Paul Burgess, I don't have time now.

Post-competition interview

Unread postby BruceFlorman » Tue Feb 14, 2006 11:48 pm

Well, there was one interesting statement in this otherwise rather uninspired interview. Unfortunately the reporter didn't bother to follow it up. Too busy asking last month's questions and trying to stir up controversy I guess.

Yelena Isinbayeva: With new trainer until end of her career
Dmitriy Doynikov

At the international light–athletics tournament in Donetsk, the "Stars of the pole", the Russian sportswoman Yelena Isinbayeva, after overcoming the bar at the height of 4.91 m indoors, established her 19th world record.

The main intrigue, because of which there were no empty places in the hall of the "Friendship" sports palace, consisted of whether Isinbayeva would be able to establish a new indoor world record and win the main prize – a BMW 3 series automobile.

And here, after two hours of expectation, when eight of the 11 sportswomen who started had already finished their appearances, Isinbayeva finally took the pole in her hands. But the bar at the height 4 meters 61 centimeters did not submit to her. However, on the second attempt she overcame it with a half–meter reserve. Then she added ten additional centimeters and again successfully jumped.

Nevertheless Isinbayeva’s new teacher, Vitaliy Petrov, who in his time trained many–time world record holder Sergey Bubka and the 2003 world champion Giuseppe Gibilisco, did not abandon his ward; he prompted about what she needed to focus her attention for the following jumps. And soon a world record took place – the first for the Russian woman this year. By taking the 4.91 m height, Isinbayeva thus thanked Donetsk, of which she recently became an honorary citizen.

After her record leap Yelena, in an exclusive interview for "Sovietskiy sport", acknowledged:

– For me the "Stars of the pole" – this is a familiar competition. I’ve noted when I come out successfully here, so the entire year then goes by with a positive sign.

– Yelena, you arrived in Donetsk earlier than all the other participants. Why was that?

– Now I am here with the training group. Then I will go on to the subsequent competitions.

– Well then, after leaving Yevgeny Trofimov, have you broken all relations with your native city?

– No, get out! I begin to love Volgograd even more. And the fans root for me as before. I associate with many, as before, on the telephone, on the Internet; they wish me success. It’s unimportant for them where I’m trained and who is my teacher. They simply pull for me.

– Why did you refuse to work with Trofimov?

– I don’t want to stir up all the past and answer this question.

– From what moment did Vitaliy Afanasevich Petrov become your trainer?

– Since the beginning of the year. I’ll say further, he will train me until the end of my entire sport career. By the way, my next start will be in Birmingham on 18 February at the indoor Grand-prix. On the 16th Vitaliy Afanasevich and I leave Donetsk. Then I won’t return here until next year.

– Did your training process change in principle?

– Certainly. My studies became different – both in the technical plan and in the plan of my work load. I like it all, everything is settled. I think the work with Vitaliy Petrov will bring its fruits.

– Whose training contributed more to the world record you just established – Yevgeny Trofimov or Vitaliy Petrov?

– I think mine. I work more than anyone.

– When you flew over the bar at the record height, it was obvious that there is also a very large reserve. You had no desire to raise the bar still higher?

– I’ve repeatedly stated my purpose – to establish as many world records as possible. Sergey Bubka has 35 of them, and I need 36 (she laughs). Therefore if I were to immediately add on 10 cm, I would never make it.

– Is it true that Italy offered you 6 million dollars for you to change citizenship?

– No. This is an invention of journalists.

– And did you obtain a proposal from Roman Abramovich to become the face of the "Sibneft" company for 1 million Euros per year?

– The journalists got this all wrong, and it came out very ridiculously. By the time this proposal was allegedly offered to me, the controlling block of shares in "Sibneft" no longer belonged to Abramovich. Who whipped all this up – I don’t know. But it’s not true. No one addressed me personally with this proposal. But if happened, I would not refuse it (she laughs). Maybe something will work out with "Gazprom".
