I started coaching a kid whose biggest pole was a 1565 at 18 steps, moved him in and taught him how to take off, and now he's on a 1575 from 12 steps jumping 6" higher. No deceleration at takeoff anymore. We're aiming to eventually move to 16, but not unless he can accelerate all the way through the box under control.

i think that if he will go threw the take off it would be very good but what poles would he be on from 16 steps because wouldnt he have to move to the 15'6 series or a 16 foot series that might be more of a problem getting over the sail piece then the actual moving back part

Becca, I didn't mean to say that he wasn't. What I was thinking was with a video, the other coaches could see what he's doing and possibly make a "constructive" rather than a "hypothetical" comments to help him improve. Case in point, your video. I thought it was wonderful and close to perfect until Altius made his comments and then I saw what he meant. That's what I meant when I made my suggestion. Later.........Mike

i think that it would be a good idea for a video but not of me because my jump isnt very good but hes working on it with me i just pretty much have enough talent to get on big poles and jump that high... last year we had a high school girl go 13'6 a sophmore girl go 13 a sophmore guy go 16 6 and an 8th grader go 14 that was our group we all were coached by coach shank

Hello everyone :) I am thaone600’s coach and father. I’m very excited that he has invested the time and energy (even though it is during his unsupervised prep time at school) getting involved with this great site and message board! It’s great watching these posts get so much feedback and interesting comments.

Corey started jumping at a very early age in the back yard landing on an old gymnastic mat. He actually started putting a pole into a hole dug in the ground when he was two years old. He jumped his age at ages 5 (5’ 7â€Â

Slowest 5.50, I hear ya on the coaching the kid thing. I coached my boys baseball teams for 10 years. There were some definite "moments" between him and me. What I found worked the best was (and I was very fortunate in this regard, becase I had some great assistant coaches) I would "assign" him to another coach, with me "overseeing" the process from a few steps back. When he wanted my help or had a question for me, he would ask (and he did often). It was at those times that he was all ears and I could really get my points across. Best of all, he would listen. Vaulting is such a unique event. As Altius says (or maybe it was Petrov, or somebody who knows a whole lot more about vaulting than I do) paraphrased now,"vaulting is a series of little things done correctly that yield a big thing".....the clearance of a cross bar using a stick to get there. Sounds to me that your boy has all of the tools to be great. Actually he's pretty darn good right now. If there are issues with his jump after take off, maybe Bubbas' "facing your demons" game might be good for him. From what I've been able to gather from many of the Vault Guru's that frequent this sight, it's way easier to get the right things down early in a career, then to unteach a bad habit then start from square one. Shoot, it's been nearly 30 years since I've jumped. You'd think I would be starting with a clean slate. No Way! I still try to "tuck and shoot" and only seldomly do I keep my take off leg straight and get my head back to get pointed "sorta" up. Sorry, theone600, for eatin' up your thread by talkin' to your Dad,but hopefully there might be something out of my ramblings that he can pick out to help you be as good as you can be. Later............Mike

I'm almost 100% sure that Lindsay Regan has the junior record at 13-5.75 or 13-6

How come ive never met anyone else besides highschoolers who claim to have a perfect plant? And usually people can jump about 2ft over their 8 step run from 16steps. So i would say jump 14ft from 8 steps and then you will be on pace.

Yeah, I've never EVER said that I have a perfect plant. It's getting better... is usually my description.

Actually, Brittany Parker from Texas jumped 13.6.25 as a Junior during the 05 track season, so I think she has the Junior record.
