Track And Field Adds Stanford Legend Toby Stevenson As An Assistant Coach
Stevenson will return to The Farm to coach the pole vault and the multi-event athletes.
Toby Stevenson from his days as a student-athlete.
Aug. 11, 2009
Stanford, Calif. - Franklin P. Johnson Director of Track and Field Edrick Floreal is pleased to announce the hiring of former Stanford legend Toby Stevenson as the new assistant coach for the pole vault and multi event athletes.
"Toby has a tremendous work ethics and truly a student of the sport," said Floreal. "As a former Stanford student-athlete and assistant coach his loyalty and love for the farm remain strong. Our student-athletes will be very fortunate to have him as a coach"
Stevenson coached for two seasons at Stanford following his own collegiate career. He was an assistant coach for the pole vault and multi-events for the Cardinal in 2001 and 2002. During that time he coached Kathleen Donoghue to back to back All-America honors in the pole vault.
As an athlete, Stevenson is a former NCAA champion in the pole vault, capturing the title in Buffalo, N.Y. in 1998. Overall, he was a six-time All-American on The Farm, earning honors both indoors and outdoors in the pole vault from 1998-2000. Stevenson also remains the Stanford record holder in the pole vault with a mark of 18-9 ¼, which he established in 2000.
Since his graduation from Stanford in 2000, Stevenson has gone onto a fabulous professional career that was highlighted by a silver medal at the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens. In addition, the Odessa, Texas native was the 2004 USA Indoor Champion, the 2003 Pan Am Games gold medalist and 2006 USA Outdoor national runner-up. Stevenson holds a personal best of 19-8 ¼ (6.00m).
Stevenson is scheduled to begin his coaching duties at the end August at Stanford. However, he will first compete for the United States in the pole vault at the 2009 World track and field Championships where he is one of the favorites. The competition takes place August 15-23, in Berlin, Germany.

Guess he takes the lead for highest PR of any current college coach. 6.00 over Lojo's 5.98. Walker or Hartwig do not coach anywhere do they?

Not really. Hartwig coaches but he's not an official college coach anywhere. Walker may have been listed as a volunteer at UW a few years ago, but he was never really a college coach either (he did coach HS a bit!).

Once Stanford grad Toby Stevenson completes his commitment to the pole vault at the IAAF World Track and Field Championships in Berlin, the Cardinal track and field athletes may just start referring to him as 'Coach Toby.'
Stevenson was hired as an assistant coach for the pole vault and multi event athletes at Stanford, and will begin his duties at the end of August.
"Toby has a tremendous work ethics and truly a student of the sport," Stanford Director of Track and Field Edrick Floreal said. "As a former Stanford student-athlete and assistant coach his loyalty and love for 'The Farm' remains strong. Our student-athletes will be very fortunate to have him as a coach"

Is he retiring?
"You have some interesting coaching theories that seem to have little potential."
