Amanda comes into the championship meet as the favorite and that's just
fine by her. She won last year's meet PRing and clearing 13' for the
first time. This year she comes in having won the NCC crown with a new
PR and another 13'+ jump. Last year I wondered if she could jump away
from Minnesota. She proved that she could. And hey guess what - we got
more snow for her too so she won't be homesick...

VaultnGus sez :

Abilene Christian has comprised almost a quarter of the fields the past
5 years and more often then not they end up scoring big points. Again
they return 3 to the final and this year Angie is top gun. She PR'd in
each of her last two meets and hasn't lost to any DII vaulters this
year. Plus her husband Cory is a 17' vaulter himself. Add to that she
maintains a B+ average AND has a 2 year old son. Now that's
impressive...

Great article on her, her husband, her family and her life

Will team once again with Katie Eckley and Angie Aguilar to form one of
the most potent pole vault trios in the nation. 2004 (Junior): Earned
allAmerica honors both indoors and outdoors, and also earned all-Lone
Star Conference honors.  Finished fourth at the NCAAII indoor
championship meet, clearing 12-0.00. On March 27, she set NCAAII,
LSCand ACU best-ever marks when she cleared 13-3.00 at the Oliver
Jackson Open in Abilene.  (That record lasted until May 8 when Chaunte
Mitchell of Cal State-Stanislaus cleared  13-3.50.)  Gorter, however,
went on to defend her Lone Star Conference title by clearing 13-2.00,
setting a new LSCmeet record.  She and Eckley tied for third at the
NCAAII outdoor championship meet with each clearing 12-5.50.  She also
finished second in the vault at the Texas Relays, clearing 12-9.50 on
April 2.  2003 (Sophomore): Won the Lone Star Conference title in the
pole vault with a personal-best vault of 12-11.50.  Went on to finish
second at the NCAA Division II outdoor national championship meet to
teammate Katie Eckley with a vault of 12-7.50.  She was seventh at the
NCAA Division II indoor championship meet with a vault of 11-7.75. She
won three vault competitions during the outdoor season, winning at the
Oliver Jackson Open at ACU (12-0.00), the Angelo State Relays (12-4.00)
and the Indian Relays at McMurry (12-6.00).  2002 (Freshman): Was a
surprise qualifier for the outdoor national championship meet where she
finished 14th (11-4.25).  Did not qualify for the meet until she jumped
11-8.50 to finish third at the ACU Open on May 9. Improved by more than
one foot from the time the indoor season started (10-6.00 on Dec. 1,
2001) to the time she recorded her best jump (11-8.50).  High school:
As a senior in high school, Gorter finished third in the pole vault at
the 2001 Michigan state meet. Also competed in the 100 and 200 meters
in high school with personal bests of 12.6 in the 100 meters and 26.6

Returns for her senior season after another solid season in 2004. 2004
(Junior): Earned all-America honors both indoors and outdoors.  At the
NCAADivision II indoor championship meet, she finished as the runner-up
with a vault of 12-4.00.  Earlier that season (Feb. 13 at Arkansas), she
cleared 13-2.50 to set NCAA II, LSC and ACUbest-ever marks. She matched

the Oliver Jackson Open on March 27.  (The NCAAIIrecord now belongs to
Chaunte Mitchell of Cal State-Stanislaus, who cleared  13-3.50 on May 8
in Modesto, Calif.)  She then went on to finish second at the Lone Star
Conferencechampionship meet (12-10.00), and then she and Gorter tied
for third at the outdoor championship meet after both cleared 12-5.50.
2003 (Sophomore): Captured her first NCAA Division II national
championship, winning the outdoor title with a career-best vault of
12-11.50.  Her victory made her the third Wildcat to win a women's pole
vault national championship, joining Jane McNeill and Meredith Garner in
that group.  She  was second to teammate Val Gorter at the Lone Star
Conference meet with a vault of 11-11.75.  Finished first at the Clyde
Littlefield Texas Relays with a vault of 12-7.50.  2002 (Freshman):

national championship meets.  Eckley, who spent the fall semester
studying in Russia, won her first collegiate meet, vaulting 12-5.50 to

either that or she'll finish in 1.7846584th place - haven't exactly got

VaultnGus sez :

A verrrry interesting season for Mr. Zilch - kinda like last indoor
season - one big jump, a few in the mid-to-low 16's and several NH's.
That big jump was quite an anomoly - he only had one prior 17' foot
jump to his credit before uncorking that monster 5.50m 18'00.50 jump in
Iowa a month ago. He's only jumped once since and it was a rather
unfortunate NH at his conference championships. However as seen above
he has done pretty darned OK at the national meets. With former
teammate Duane Chappel having graduated it finally may be his time to
take the top spot...

Matt has had himself quite a nice season. He got himself back over 17'

He took the MIAA crown and finished second at the stacked Tyson
Invitational. Unfortunately he's the opposite of Mr. Zilch - he's had
great and highly consistent seasons but has been bitten by the
no-height bug at nationals. Hopefully that will change this weekend.
