Kira Sims Ties For 11th In Olympic Trials Pole Vault Final
LeShaunte Edwards does not make 200 meter final
July 19, 2004
SACRAMENTO, Calif. - Former UA standouts LeShaunte Edwards and Kira Sims saw their Olympic dreams come to a close this weekend as the 2004 U.S. Olympic Trials wrapped up. The meet, held at the Alex G. Spanos Sports Complex in Sacramento, Calif., set the U.S. track and field squad for the forthcoming XXVII Olympiad in Athens, Greece, July 20-29.
Sims, one of two collegiate competitors in the women's pole vault field Sunday, cleared her opening height of 13-09.25 on the first attempt but failed to clear the second height of 14-01.25 tying her for 11th in the 14-competitor field . The competition was won by former world record holder and 2000 Olympic Gold Medalist Stacy Dragila who cleared 15-07.00, outdistancing the field by nearly a foot.
Edwards clocked 20.67 in the semifinal round of the 200 meters Saturday afternoon to place 12th. He did not qualify for the final. It marked his first trip to the semifinal and his best-ever finish at the outdoor national meet. He advanced out of the quarterfinal round Saturday morning with a time of 20.67 to earn the 16th and final spot in the semifinals.
