FSU's Janson and Johnson Awarded ACC Honors

Senior Lacy Janson and redshirt sophomore Garrett Johnson were named ACC Co-Performers of the Week after becoming the first Seminoles to automatically qualify for the 2005 NCAA Indoor National Championships.

Tallahassee, Fla. - Florida State senior Lacy Janson (Sarasota, Fla./Cardinal Mooney) and redshirt sophomore Garrett Johnson (Tampa, Fla./Tampa Baptist Academy) earned ACC Co-Performer of the Week Honors for their performances at the Florida Intercollegiate meet in Gainesville, Fla., on Saturday January 15, 2004.

Janson hit the automatic qualifying mark in the women's pole vault competition at the Florida Intercollegiates in Gainesville, Fla. over the weekend. The redshirt-junior from Sarasota, Fla. crossed the bar at 13' 9.25" (4.20m) to win the event. The meet was Janson's first indoor meet since winning the indoor national pole vault championship in 2003.

The Seminoles return to the track this weekend traveling to East Tennessee State in Johnson City, Tenn. and the Pole Vault Summit in Reno, Nev.

Redshirt junior Lacy Janson talks about her record-setting five league pole vault titles, her national championship and her decision to compete in the Olympic Trials.

Tallahassee, Fla. Judging by her modest personality, one would never guess that Florida State track and field's Lacy Janson has dominated the pole vault on the national scene for the past three seasons. The 2003 NCAA Indoor National Pole Vault Champion has put in the hard work, dedication and drive - all building blocks for a successful collegiate career. The five-time Atlantic Coast Conference Pole Vault Champion has quietly conquered her opponents, one meet at a time.

"Being awarded (All-ACC and All-American honors) is a great feeling but there is always room for improvement," said Janson, who has always chosen extra hours on the track as apposed to extra hours at a party.

In an April 2003 interview with the FSView, Janson explained how her goal of being an Olympian is far more important then going out to a party. She has an understanding of the sacrifices an athlete must make in order to reach their ultimate goal. Since the redshirt junior was young, her mentality has never wavered from her goal of achieving success on the world's stage - the Olympic Games. This was a big factor in her decision to redshirt the 2004 indoor season to train for the Olympic Trials - a choice she does not regret.

"It was a good experience, a decision I wouldn't take back." Janson said.

The Florida State track and field program is familiar with the process of producing Olympians as 18 former Garnet and Gold members have reached the global sporting stage. Janson will be the first woman in FSU school history to represent the United States at the Olympics if she qualifies for the team. She took her first step towards this goal, by competing in the Olympic Trials over the summer of 2004. After vying for a spot on the national team, against the best athletes in the nation, the only three-time ACC Outdoor Title holder gained valuable experience at a highly competitive level so that upon returning she should be a seasoned veteran.

Janson's list of collegiate achievements is very extensive when you look back over the course of three seasons in Tallahassee. During her freshman year, she recorded an impressive sixth place finish at the 2002 NCAA Indoor Championships earning the first of four All-America honors and setting the league pole vault record at 13'7.25" (4.15m). At the 2003 NCAA Outdoor Championships, she earned her first outdoor ACC title and her second All-American honor en route to a ninth-place finish at nationals.

In her sophomore year, Janson started the indoor season off by capturing her second indoor pole vault conference title, winning the event with a height of 14'-feet, shattering the ACC Championships Meet record. Before beginning the outdoor season, she picked up a national championship - besting all competitors with her 14'7.25" (4.37m) vault - a school, conference and career-best for the Seminole in only her second season of collegiate competition.

Now, with two indoor and one outdoor season left in her career as a Seminole, Janson is looking to conclude her Seminole season with a bang, on and off the field. Majoring in exercise science and minoring in dietetics, she has always been able to balance school, athletics, and friends throughout her career.

Thus far Janson's ambition has propelled her into the elite of the track and field world. She has always had a champion's desire, to not only be the best in college, but the best pole vaulter in the world. With this mentality the Noles are looking at three more competitive seasons with Janson and she is looking at a great career in pole vaulting or anything she chooses to do.
