Ryan Vu, Interlake boys track

Vu, a senior, set a personal best at the Pasco Invitational, winning the pole vault by clearing a state-leading 15 feet, 3 inches. It was only his second meet this season since recovering from a pulled hamstring.

Brittany Aanstad

Lake Stevens girls track and field

The junior set a school record with a pole-vault of 10 feet 4 inches Thursday in a three-team WesCo North meet. The previous record of 10-3 was set by Malea Russum in 2001. Aanstad also won the javelin (128-6 ½) and high jump (5-2) to help the Vikings defeat Monroe and Oak Harbor.

Eastside prep stars of the week

Laura Schvaneveldt, Interlake track and field

Schvaneveldt, a senior and two-time defending Class 3A state champion, set a meet record and personal best at the Bellevue Classic Invitational, winning the pole vault by clearing a state-leading 12 feet, 6 inches. The mark was a foot better than the one she cleared to win the Pasco Invitational the week before.

Josh Winters

SCHOOL: Bothell

SPORT: Track and field

VITALS: Senior, 5-foot-9 pole vaulter

WHAT HE DID: Winters set a Bothell school record, clearing 15 feet, 7 inches in the pole vault -- a state best this season -- in a meet against Roosevelt. He also tied for first in the 100-meter dash (11.5 seconds) and anchored the winning 400 relay team (44.8).

HOW HE DID IT: "I think he's a cleaner vaulter than most of the vaulters out there," coach Drew Langland said. "A lot of guys, you'll see them kicking and flailing all over the place. He's shown me in the last couple weeks that he can get pretty vertical."

WHAT HE'LL DO NEXT: Winter ordered 15 foot, 6 inch carbon fiber poles that should push him over the 16 foot mark. Winters may aim for 16-6 in a meet today against Inglemoor and Woodinville. If he can improve the timing of his swing and his turn on top of the pole, the mark is possible, Langland said. Winters is undecided on a college.
