Mansfield freshman pole vaulter Shade Weygandt, tired and dehydrated, won the 5A girls pole vault, clearing the bar for a personal-record of 12-9. Southlake Carroll senior Kristen Keith also cleared 12-9, but Weygandt won a jump-off.
Four months after her 15th birthday, Weygandt is a state champion. An hour after her event, she was refreshed and smiling, patiently waiting for the awards presentation.
"I wanted to stop," said Weygandt, suffering from the 90-degree heat on the track. "Then I realized that quitting was not an option."
Weygandt and Keith were sensational in their head-to-head matchup, each clearing 11-6, 12-0, 12-3, 12-6 and 12-9 without a miss.
Neither, however, cleared 13 feet, which would have been a 5A record.
Doyle overcame her own health issues to win bronze.
After finishing second at state as a freshman, Doyle was satisfied with the bronze Saturday. On the night she qualified for state at the regional meet two weeks ago in Waco, she was diagnosed with a kidney infection. Although she was cleared to compete at the state meet, she lost valuable practice time and was still on antibiotics when the state meet began on Friday.
Doyle started fast, clearing 11-6 and 12 feet without a miss. She missed twice at 12-3 and once at 12-6 to end her day.
Instead of sulking about missing out on a gold medal, she was talking about car shopping because she turned 16 on Wednesday. She still has another two years remaining to win gold.
