Profile: Hoffman didn't have any problem upholding his family's successful athletic tradition.
"I picked up pole vaulting because my older brothers were involved in the event," Hoffman said.
Hoffman's oldest brother, Herman, 91, a 1939 Texas A&M graduate who lives just northeast of Amarillo in Panhandle, started the tradition at Somerset in 1933-35.
Brothers Kenneth, 87, of Poteet, and Adolph, 84, of Somerset, vaulted from 1938-40. Kenneth won the Class B pole vault title in 1939, and he and Adolph were ranked 1-2 in 1940.
Glenn Hoffman, an All-South Texas pick in both football and baseball in high school, had eight younger relatives who also were pole vaulters, including his son David, who competed for Churchill in the early 1970s.
"What I enjoyed most about the pole vault was that it did pay for my college education," said Hoffman, whose career-best 13-41/2 effort was the top vault at UT during his two years there. He also was a two-year letterman in baseball at Victoria College.
Hoffman and his wife, Lillian, recently celebrated their 54th anniversary. They also have two daughters, Annette and Glenda, and two grandsons.
