EUGENE — Niki McEwen was at the top of her game, flying high after placing second in the pole vault competition at the 2007 USA Championships last June.

Over the next 12 months, however, she suffered disappointment, injury, illness, long hours on the road and the fall out of a community tragedy.

NIKI MCEWEN

who: Medford resident and pole vaulter at the Olympic trials in Eugene.
of note: She is a former University of Oregon star, who married North Medford graduate Seth McEwen. Niki's career-best mark in the pole vault is 14-103
