Hartwig gears up for Trials with Prefontaine Classic win

By Seth Holmun
Sun sports writer

At 36 years old, who said Jeff Hartwig is over the hill?
He’s still flying over the bar.
The Jonesboro resident notched his first victory of the year in the United States last weekend, winning the prestigious Prefontaine Classic in Eugene, Ore., by clearing 19-01/4.
Hartwig, who set the event record in the event by clearing 19-9 in 1999, topped some of the nation’s best, including Toby Stevenson. Stevenson boasts the best mark in the world this year at 19-81/2, but placed fourth in the Prefontaine.
Four vaulters jumped 191/4 but Hartwig did so with the fewest misses to win the meet. He cleared the bar on his first attempts at 18-1/4, 18-41/2 , 18-81/4 and the winning mark to gain momentum heading into next month’s U.S. Olympic Team Trials.
“I think the main thing is that it tells me I’m where I want to be as far as getting ready for the Trials,â€Â

Hartwig, Trials veteran, ready to vault

By Kevin Turbeville
Sun sports editor

Jeff Hartwig was a nervous long shot when he first went to the Olympic Trials, a confident underdog when he made his second appearance and a favorite who ran into unexpected problems on his third trip.
Today, as Hartwig competes in the Olympic Trials for the fourth time, the Jonesboro-based pole vaulter is a steady veteran. Others might be tense entering the preliminaries at Alex G. Spanos Sports Complex, but Hartwig’s voice betrayed no nerves Thursday.
“Typically the guys will go in a little fearful, a little scared, a little worried,â€Â
